In the popular time travel film series “Back to the Future” by director Robert Zemeckis, various Easter eggs are hidden. Among some cowboys from Part 3 are proven veterans of Western cinema.
What Easter egg is being referred to? The third part of “Back to the Future” famously takes the likable character Marty McFly back to the year 1885, when inconsistencies were still resolved with revolvers and traveling was done on horseback or by train.
It fits perfectly that three heroes of Western cinema make a small cameo appearance in the film. The trio can be seen at minute 27 and 50 seconds. The men sit at a table, drink whiskey, and make sarcastic comments. The following actors play these characters:
- Dub Taylor has appeared in over 250 films since 1938, including Sam Peckinpah’s milestone The Wild Bunch, but also in Cincinnati Kid, Forty Guns, Bonnie and Clyde, The Unforgiven, The Man from Snowy River, Rough Country, Getaway, or Maverick.
- Harry Carey Jr. is also a Western veteran, with appearances in films such as Rio Grande, The Black Falcon, The 7th Cavalry, Rio Bravo, Cheyenne, or The Devil’s Brigade.
- Pat Buttram might be familiar to you especially through his appearances in series like Hunter, Knight Rider, or Who’s the Boss? In the 1940s, he already made a name for himself as Roy Rogers’ sidekick in the Western genre.
For all three actors, who have since passed away, the appearance in Back to the Future Part 3 was a final milestone of a long career.
A Celebration for Easter Egg Hunters
What other Easter eggs are in Back to the Future? A lot! For example, Billy Zane (Titanic) made his debut in the first part of the series. In Part 2, a whole shop window full of references can be seen, including the Sports Almanac, the video camera from Part 1, a Roger Rabbit rabbit, and a reference to Jaws.
The band ZZ Top also makes a guest appearance in Part 3. In the first film, you could spot a certain Huey Lewis for 16 seconds, who released classic songs like The Power Of Love or Back In Time with his band Huey Lewis & the News.
