A Pokémon trainer found his old Gameboy while visiting his parents and turned it on. And in doing so, he rediscovered one of the rarest Pokémon ever.
A visit to the family home can uncover some old treasures. This experience was also made by a Pokémon trainer who found and turned on his old Gameboy during a visit to his parents’ house.
In addition to the fact that the batteries of the Gameboy still worked after 14 years, he was in for an even bigger surprise.
The save file of his old Pokémon game was still functional, despite the considerable time that had passed since the release of Pokémon Red. In this save file, he found an old buddy again – a Mew. And this is no ordinary Mew.
One of the few legitimate specimens
What makes the Mew special? While most Mew in the 1st generation were likely created through tricks, cheating, or cloning, this is a legitimate Mew. This means that the Mew was transferred directly from Nintendo to the Gameboy game.
To obtain such a legitimate Mew, players had to attend specific events that took place in limited numbers around the turn of the millennium. This includes the Pokémon 2000 Stadium Tour that took place in the USA. And it is here that the trainer received his Mew.
Considering the fact that the save files of the old Pokémon games from the 1st generation are lost once the internal batteries of the games fail, there are probably only a few of these legitimate Mew left today.
Speaking of save files: Another trainer took on a special challenge and played through 100 save files simultaneously.

What does the community say about it? Besides suggestions that the trainer should create a backup of the save file with the Mew, there are also envious voices from the community. Other commentators were reminded of their old times by the trainer’s save file.
Some of the comments say:
I am 34 years old and have a Steam Deck. But I am very jealous right now

, recommends another commentator on RedditOh man, I still remember going to the game store and getting my free Mew. You had to insert your cartridge into something and then got a Mew transferred over
, recalls another commentator on Reddit
Hopefully, the trainer succeeds in creating a backup of his save file so he can keep his Mew for many more years.
What do you think about the story? Have you made such a find yourself? Do you perhaps even own a legitimate Mew? Feel free to write in the comments. If you prefer to be out and about in Pokémon GO, take a look at the events in May 2024 in Pokémon GO.
