During the Pokémon Presents, gameplay footage of Pokémon Legends: Z-A was presented for the first time. It showcases the gigantic city of Illumina City and how trainers can navigate within it.
What can be seen in the trailer? The video showcases Illumina City from the Kalos region in all its splendor. Some of you may know the city from Pokémon X and Y. There are numerous buildings that adorn the city. In the center of the city stands the Prism Tower.
Amidst all the skyscrapers, cafes, and shopping centers, it is possible to engage in Pokémon battles. Players can choose from three starter Pokémon:
- Chikorita
- Tepig
- Snivy
The special feature: There are wild areas in the city. These regions are habitats for wild Pokémon, where you can go on a quest for pocket monsters.

How does the battle system work now? To catch a Pokémon, you need to aim at the respective pocket monster with a Poké Ball and capture it. After that, you can use it in trainer battles. The battles take place not in rigid rounds, but dynamically in the environment. Both you and your Pokémon move around the city, including during battles.
You have four attacks available as quick access, which you can use to attack the opposing Pokémon. Special effects come into play, but they don’t seem to damage the city – even during earthquake attacks.
For the first time in the Pokémon series, the attacks have an area of effect and range. Therefore, your Pokémon needs to position itself well, and the timing must be right, so the opponent cannot dodge the attack. Pokémon can even undergo Mega Evolution.
Depending on which gender you choose, you will encounter a different companion in the city: Alton or Zita. The hotel where we stay belongs to Azett and his partner Floette. However, there are many other characters you will encounter who manage the design of the city.
When will the title be released? Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be released in late 2025 for Nintendo Switch. Unfortunately, the exact date was not specified in the presentation.
