In Pokémon GO, you will receive corresponding postcards when opening gifts. Soon, these postcards are not only expected to be interesting for collectors. We at MeinMMO have looked into what Niantic has planned.
Which postcards are we talking about? Those who receive a gift from a friend in Pokémon GO not only receive various items, stardust, or 7-km eggs, but also a postcard from the respective place the gift comes from.
To enjoy these postcards even after opening them, or to keep your own postcards as memories before sending them, you can secure them in the so-called postcard book for some time now.
However, the postcards have not had a deeper meaning than a nice option for collectors until now. That might change soon, as the PokeMiners, a group of data miners, have found hints in the game code of Pokémon GO that show a new feature that is supposed to bring you a special Pokémon.
The PokeMiners are a group of data miners who regularly search the game code for new information. They then share this information publicly with all other players.
In the past, they have almost always been correct with their predictions about new Pokémon and features. However, these are not official information, which means Niantic can decide at any time to change the data or opt against a release.
They discovered a new function
What was found? As user martycochrane reports in his current reddit post, the PokeMiners have stumbled upon a new interesting feature in the source code during their last search, which could apparently come to the game soon.
According to this, the postcards you receive from your friends’ gifts are to be used not just for collecting, but depending on where the package comes from, they may also grant you a new Pokémon.
To do this, you need to save a certain number of postcards from a specific region in your postcard book to then get an encounter with Vivillon.
The fact that the Pokémon and its pre-evolutions could soon be part of Pokémon GO has been suspected by trainers since the release of the new image on the occasion of the 6th anniversary of Pokémon GO, which shows new Pokémon. On closer inspection, Vivillon could also be discovered.
What kind of Pokémon is Vivillon?
Vivillon is a Bug and Flying-type Pokémon from the 6th generation of games. It has the pre-evolutions Spewpa and Scatterbug.
This is what it looks like: While Spewpa resembles a small gray caterpillar and Scatterbug looks like a plush white cocoon, Vivillon represents a beautiful butterfly.
It has numerous forms that differ based on their colors and patterns and can be found in various regions of the earth. Each form is influenced by the respective climate conditions of its habitat.

In which regions can Vivillon be found? Where exactly each form of Vivillon will be found in the future and whether its pre-evolution Spewpa can also be obtained through postcards or will even spawn in the wild is not officially known yet.
A first hint regarding the regions could come from the found map by the PokeMiners from August 4, 2022. This graphic shows a world map with different areas marked in various colors. These markings could indicate the respective locations of the different forms of Vivillon.
How strong will Vivillon be? The little butterfly and its pre-evolutions will likely not be particularly strong. It will mainly be a Pokémon for collectors. Those looking for a strong Pokémon for raids should rather look for the best attackers in Pokémon GO.

Trainers say: “This is really one of their best ideas”
The find regarding the new Pokémon in connection with the postcard book is well received in the reddit community. In the past, Niantic had also introduced monsters that were only supposed to be found in specific areas as regional.
For this reason, trainers are glad that they now have the chance to obtain a regional monster without much traveling with such a feature. Furthermore, Niantic also makes the postcard book a bit more interesting for other players with this feature. You can read the following comments on reddit:
- Teban54: “So they promote the use of the postcard function… At least it’s not another region. And I have no problem with that.”
- repo_sado: “This is really one of their best ideas. Checking gifts every day to find the ones you still need is great. What I wonder is: will Spewpa spawn in the wild locally too? Because that’s a lot of candies if you want to evolve all forms.”
- bi-cycle: “Very cool! We can get all forms without having to travel everywhere!”
- cedrickterrick: “A glance at the Vivillon map is enough to know it’s going to be crazy still!”
- Tarcanus: “As much as I have hated the postcard function, this is a very nice use for it.”
To prevent your postcard book from overflowing and hitting its limits, according to the PokeMiners, there will also be an option to delete several postcards at once. Some players furthermore hope that it will also be possible to increase the storage limit in the postcard book as they are already maxing out the limit of 300.
Whether Niantic decides to allow Vivillon to be obtained through the postcard book soon remains to be seen. Should there be any further information on this, you will, of course, learn about it here at MeinMMO.
What do you think about the idea of earning the regional forms of Vivillon through your friends’ postcards? Are you already actively using the postcard book? Or do you hope that the little butterfly, like other regional Pokémon, should only be found in certain areas? Let us know in the comments here on MeinMMO.
By the way, postcards are not the only thing trainers collect in Pokémon GO. A number of reddit users are showing off their crazy Pikachu collections.
