In Pokémon GO there are now numerous monsters from various game generations. We at MeinMMO show you which ones they are and want to know from you which one is the best.
What are these generations? The monsters that you can find in Pokémon GO can be assigned to different generations. These are related to the various regions where the respective Pokémon can be captured according to their story.
The assignment of the different generations in the main series games is based on the release of the respective Pokémon games, which first thematize the corresponding regions. For example, the GameBoy games Pokémon Red and Blue revolved around the Kanto region and thus encompassed the 1st game generation.
We have summarized which regions belong to which generation and which monsters can be assigned to them below.
All 8 Game Generations at a Glance
How many generations are there? While the games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet for the Nintendo Switch will soon see the release of the 9th generation in a few days, trainers can currently only find monsters up to the 8th generation in Pokémon GO.
However, these are also not fully available in the game yet. Trainers have been waiting for the release of Kecleon for some time now, which would complete the Pokédex for the Hoenn region. Below we have summarized all regions and their corresponding generations for you.
1st Generation: Kanto Region
In the first game generation, everything revolves around the Pokémon of the Kanto region. Most players will be familiar with this region, as the anime surrounding Ash and his friends also began here.
Here you can encounter the starter Pokémon Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Popular monsters like Pikachu, Chansey, Snorlax, Mew, and Mewtwo also represent this region.
2nd Generation: Johto Region
The second game generation deals with the monsters of the Johto region. In addition to the starter Pokémon Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile, especially Pokémon like Espeon, Umbreon, Houndoom, the regional Pokémon Scizor, as well as the legendary monsters Lugia and Ho-Oh are in the spotlight.
In this generation, you can also find several baby Pokémon, such as Pichu, Cleffa, Togepi, or Swablu.
3rd Generation: Hoenn Region
In the 3rd generation, monsters from the Hoenn region appear. This region hosts the starter Pokémon Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. Additionally, monsters like Slaking, Hariyama, Kyogre, Groudon, or Rayquaza can also be found.
With the exception of Kecleon, this region is otherwise fully available in the game. When the remaining monster will finally make its debut remains to be seen. According to developers, Kecleon is supposed to get a very special release.
4th Generation: Sinnoh Region
In the fourth generation, particularly many strong Pokémon can be found. The Sinnoh region is home to not only the starter Pokémon Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup but also monsters like Luxray, Roserade, Rampardos, Garchomp, Rhyperior, or Mamoswine, which are among the best attackers in Pokémon GO.
Furthermore, you need a Sinnoh Stone to evolve some of these monsters. Here we show you which evolutions are particularly worth obtaining with the Sinnoh Stone.
However, this region is also not completely finished. Trainers are still waiting there for the water Pokémon Phione and Manaphy.
5th Generation: Unova Region
The 5th game generation focuses on the Pokémon of the Unova region. It is represented by the starter Pokémon Snivy, Tepig, and Oshawott and also features a series of regional Pokémon such as Pidove, Darumaka, and Ducklett, as well as Jiutesto, Karadonis, and Maracamba.
In addition to legendary monsters like Terrakion or Reshiram, it also offers the mysterious Pokémon Victini and Meloetta a home. However, several monsters are still missing here, which are waiting for a release.
6th Generation: Kalos Region
In the 6th generation, you can encounter Pokémon from the Kalos region. Here you will meet the starter Pokémon Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie. Other well-known faces from this region are also Florges, Dedenne, Helioptile, Yveltal, and Hoopa. However, trainers are still waiting for several new releases, such as Volcanion or Zygarde.
7th Generation: Alola Region
The 7th generation deals with the monsters of the Alola region. The starter Pokémon Rowlet, Litten, and Popplio debuted in the game this March.
During the “Alola Season”, the various islands of the Alola region were thoroughly thematized, and you could encounter the legendary guardians Tapu Koko, Tapu Lele, Tapu Bulu, and Tapu Fini.
On the occasion of the GO Fest, mysterious Pokémon known as Ultra Beasts, which are pure horror, were also introduced into the game. This includes, among others, Nihilego, Xurkitree, Buzzwole, and Pheromosa.
Although they originate from the Ultra Dimension, they reach the world of Pokémon GO through Ultra Wormholes. Since they are causing chaos in the Alola region’s world and fighting against the guardians, they can also be assigned to the 7th generation.
8th Generation: Galar & Hisui Regions
The latest generation that plays a role in Pokémon GO consists of monsters from the 8th generation. They belong to both the Galar region and the Hisui region. Here you can find Pokémon like Rillaboom, Wooloo, Zacian, Zamazenta, or Zarude, as well as Hisui Pokémon Sliep and Wyrdeer.
Since these regions have not been featured in Pokémon GO for long, several monsters from this generation are still missing in the game, such as Kleavor. Ursaluna, the final evolution of Teddiursa, also belongs to the 8th generation and will celebrate its debut on November 12. Here we reveal how strong Ursaluna will be.
