Pokémon GO is still a great success, and the servers are now running relatively stable, with millions of people worldwide eagerly hunting for little virtual monsters. This brings in considerable money for Nintendo and developer Niantic, but according to company boss John Hanke, the augmented reality app is also meant to make the world a better place.
Those who said a few weeks ago that soon millions of people worldwide would run around and catch funny little creatures via smartphone would surely have been laughed at and called crazy. But today, no one laughs at the Pokémon phenomenon anymore, and thousands of people still go out on the streets every day or venture into the bushes to catch particularly rare Pokémon.
This makes the dream of Niantic CEO John Hanke come true. The company boss explicitly wanted to create a game that encourages people to go outside and explore their world: “… we had a shared vision for the kind of game we wanted to develop. We wanted to create a game in the spirit of the original Pokémon game – a child, outside, collecting insects in the wild”
A better world thanks to little monsters
According to the company boss, this childlike joy of discovery and exploration should also improve the world itself: “We wanted to build a game that inspires people to get outside, move, discover new places, and have fun with friends. We believe that a game like this enriches our customers’ lives and makes the world a better place.”
Mein-MMO says: Call me a naive optimist, but I see things similarly to the good John Hanke. I recently went on a big Pokémon hunt with my friends and met many other players along the way, and it was always a great time, and everyone was friendly, even though we were in different teams . In the end, we even shared our powerbanks with other players whose batteries were running low, and they were still able to catch the huge flood of Eevees.
I would never have met these people without Pokémon GO, and I would be poorer in some nice experiences now. But what do you think? Does Pokémon GO really lead to a better world, or is it just a silly hype that will be over by winter? Let us know in the comments!
