On May 12, 2022, the Water Festival starts in Pokémon GO, where you can look forward to many special features again. We at MeinMMO show you which spawns, shinies, and bonuses await you at this event.
What kind of event is this? The Water Festival is all about the Alola island Poni, whose guardian is Kapu-Kime and, of course, many Water-type Pokémon. You can also look forward to numerous spawns, shinies, and bonuses.
When does the Water Festival start? On May 12, 2022, at 10:00 AM local time, the Water Festival kicks off. From then on, you have until May 20, 2022, at 8:00 PM local time to take advantage of all the event’s benefits.
All Spawns and Shinies for the Water Festival
With the start of the Water Festival, your journey in the Alola region continues. You could already encounter Kapu-Kime, the guardian of the island Poni, in level-5 raids since May 10. During the event, however, you can also expect further themed spawns.
For the first time, you can encounter the Water- and Bug-type Pokémon Araqua and evolve it into Aranestro. Additionally, the Rock- and Water-type Pokémon Bithora celebrates its shiny debut in the game, and Lapras has dressed up especially for you with its blue scarf. There is a guaranteed encounter with the new Lapras here.

Wild Spawns for the Water Festival
Of course, for the Water Festival, Niantic will thematically adjust the wild spawns, and you will find many Water-type Pokémon in the wilderness. Keep an eye out for the following monsters:

Bithora as a new shiny for the Water Festival
With the start of the event, you can look forward to a new shiny in Pokémon GO: Bithora. This Rock- and Water-type Pokémon comes from the 6th generation of games and can evolve into Thanathora.
You can recognize the shiny version by its red and white striped body and the green leaf-like headpiece. During the event, you should look for it in the wilderness. Alternatively, you can hatch it from 7 km eggs and find it in field research.
All Bonuses for the Water Festival
As you are used to from other events in Pokémon GO, there will be the odd bonus during the Water Festival. In addition to a global challenge and the special research for the island Poni, which will be available to you before the actual event starts, you can expect the following bonuses during the event:
- Rain modules last 2 hours
- Double candy when hatching
- More XL candies for hatched eggs
- New scarf for your avatar
- Event field research
- Time-limited research
- Reward: 1,000 XP, 1,000 stardust, 50 mega energy for Gyarados, an encounter with Lapras with scarf and an encounter with Araqua
The global challenge for the Water Festival
What is this challenge? As you already know from other events, like the GO Fest, there will be a global challenge for the Water Festival. In this, all trainers (worldwide) must achieve a specific goal together to earn a special bonus for the rest of the event.
The following task and reward will be available:
- Joint task: Catch 600,000,000 Water-type Pokémon
- Bonus: Double candy when catching Pokémon
When does the global challenge run? Unlike most other bonuses, the global challenge runs from May 11, 2022, at 8:00 PM to May 21, 2022, at 10:00 AM German time.
The special research for the island Poni
As announced by Niantic as part of the Alola season, the next special research for the Alola region under the name “A Poni Adventure” was already unlocked for you on May 10, 2022. Here you can find all tasks and rewards for the new special research.
If you complete this and the research from the previous three islands in time, you will receive a free bonus special research at the end of the season starting May 25.
