A big update in Pokémon GO is changing quite a lot, such as catching screens, biomes, and spawns. We summarize the most important points here for you.
What kind of update is this? It is part of the big “Rediscover-GO” update, which is coming in several parts. It is now active and introduces the parts “Discover the world anew” and “Discover Kanto anew.”
The focus of the update is on a graphic redesign of the catching screens and the map, which now reflect more clearly what kind of “biomes” you are in. The visual appearance you see in the game strongly depends on where you are in the real world. These biomes are also interesting from a gameplay perspective.
After the avatar update received a lot of criticism from the community, it seems that the new update is better received by fans (via reddit). We summarize the three most important points for you here.
Biomes in Pokémon GO – Why are they important?
These are biomes: The biomes are based on your surroundings in the real world. They describe habitats where you find different Pokémon. This has been the case before, but now it seems that appropriate spawns are more strongly associated with the biomes (via reddit). This is likely to be used more for events in the future, as currently, for example, old Kanto Pokémon are distributed across various biomes.
Specifically announced are the forest, the beach, the mountains, and the city as biomes. In the “beach” biome, for example, you can now find the new Pokémon Schligdri.
As of now, players have also identified the following “subcategories” of biomes (via reddit):
- City
- Mountains
- Ocean
- Forest
- Lake
- River
- Park
- Grassland
It is still unclear how many different types of biomes there are in total. It is quite possible that the list will continue to grow.
What does this mean for players? As of now, it seems that it might be worthwhile to explore different biomes to find more varied Pokémon, instead of finding more or less the same Pokémon everywhere. How the biomes will affect gameplay in detail will be revealed in the coming days.
New screens in Pokémon GO – What do I need to know?
What is changing: The most noticeable change is the new catching screens. They will now be adapted to the respective biome you are in.
So if you are by the sea, you will see water in the background. If you are instead in a city, the screen will show buildings. Additionally, it seems that there will be several screen variations for each biome, so that it does not always look the same.
The screens in battles are also changing, for example, when you face other players or Team GO Rocket. In addition, the basic map you are on now shows a new image. It is now clearer to see which biomes can be found where.
A tip for the graphics: Some players report performance or battery issues due to the new graphics. You can disable a switch for “Enhanced Graphics” in the “Advanced Settings,” which will deactivate certain effects, shadows, and textures.
You will generally find practical settings to improve the performance of Pokémon GO.
Kanto in Pokémon GO now in different biomes
What about Kanto? The third part of the update revolves around the classic Kanto Pokémon of the first generation. They now spawn in different biomes. The officially announced ones are:
- Forest: Bisasam, Raupy, Hornliu, Myrapla
- Beach: Schiggy, Enton, Jurob, Karpador
- Mountains: Sandan, Piepi, Zubat, Diga
- City: Raupy, Taubsi, Machollo, Nebulak
However, these are not all the monsters. In our editorial team, for example, we found Relaxo in the city biome, and more Pokémon are expected to follow. Additionally, a new special research surrounding the Kanto region has been unlocked.
Moreover, the new Pokémon Schligda, a distant water-type relative of Digda, can now be found in the beach biome. Although it does not originate from Kanto, it is an important biome spawn.
