The developers of Pokémon GO are discontinuing support for some older Apple devices that do not support iOS 11.
Pokémon GO is becoming increasingly modern, utilizing new features of iOS operating systems to enhance the game. Those who cannot keep up will be left behind. For this reason, trainers with outdated Apple iPhones and iPads will soon be unable to play Pokémon GO.

iPhone 5 and Pokémon GO part ways
In a blog post, the developers of Pokémon GO explain that they will discontinue support for some Apple devices in an upcoming update.
Affected are iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c models with the model identifiers:
- iPhone 5 (2012): A1428, A1429, A1442
- iPhone 5c (2013): A1456, A1507, A1516, A1529, A1532
Additionally, the following iPad devices will no longer be supported by the upcoming update:
- iPad 2 (2011): A1395, A1396, A1397
- iPad Mini (1st generation, late 2012): A1432, A1454, A1455
- iPad (3rd generation, early 2012): A1416, A1430, A1403
- iPad (4th generation, late 2012): A1458, A1459, A1460
This change takes effect on February 28, 2018. The developers explain: Those playing Pokémon GO with the devices mentioned from this point on may
- Not be able to access their Pokémon GO account
- Not be able to use PokéCoins
- Not be able to use items
The reason for the changes is the latest enhancements in Pokémon GO that require features of the iOS 11 operating system. Since the aforementioned devices do not support these features (as they cannot be updated to iOS 11), support will be discontinued.
Niantic wants to ensure that trainers have the best possible gaming experience.
Trainers with outdated devices will be unable to utilize these features and may experience issues and bugs in the game. Such decisions are driven by the progress of technology.
