In Pokémon GO the latest update introduced a feature that marked EX-Raid gyms with a blue mark in the top right corner. Since then, players have been increasingly reporting that gyms that previously triggered an EX-Raid no longer carry such a mark.
What’s it about? Trainers are puzzled as to why EX-Raid gyms are suddenly disappearing. We will show you which gyms are typically designated for EX-Raids and share a theory on this, held by some players.
What are EX-Raids? In EX-Raids, you fight against monsters that have not yet appeared in the wild. To participate in an EX-Raid, you need an invitation from the game or from a friend. You earn this invitation by successfully completing raids at those specific gyms. So far, the EX-Raid boss Mewtwo, which is now available in regular raids. Its successor is Deoxys.
EX-Raid gyms suddenly disappearing
For the past few days, EX-Raid gyms have been marked with tags in the upper right corner. More and more players are now reporting that gyms no longer carry these tags, even though they have previously qualified as EX-Raid gyms. An EX-Raid gym has not been marked as such since the change.
Reports from the community: On Reddit, the topic has already been discussed. The user gabumon34 writes: “A gym that distributed EX-Raid invitations multiple times does not have a mark!”
Twitter user MrFrischi also confirms the disappearance.
Some gyms have already lost their new mark: Some gyms that had previously carried a mark due to the change have since lost it again.
Are there no EX-Raids taking place there? The community is divided on this issue. Since Mewtwo became catchable in regular raids, there has not been an EX-Raid. The new EX-Raid Pokémon Deoxys has been announced, but invitations for a raid have not yet been distributed. So it cannot yet be confirmed that gyms without a mark truly do not host EX-Raids.
YouTuber also talks about the disappearance: Regarding the disappearance, YouTuber “Hong & Friends” made a video. From minute 0:53, he talks about a missing EX-Raid gym in his vicinity.
Trainers speculate: This is how Niantic may select EX-Raid gyms
Players have the following theory: Every week there is a new wave of invitations to EX-Raids. However, there can only be one EX-Raid in a certain area per week. Niantic wants to give players hints that they have a chance of receiving an invitation to an EX-Raid at gyms with a mark. Once a wave of EX-Raid invitations has been distributed, the marks can transfer to other gyms. However, these must also meet the requirements of an EX-Raid gym.
Also, in the above-linked video, the theory is discussed from minute 4:10.
How has an EX-Raid gym been recognized so far? So far, it has been easy to identify an EX-Raid gym. With a few exceptions, all gyms located in a park and thus also in a nest were EX-Raid gyms. If enough raids had taken place before, EX-Raids with Mewtwo could be triggered there. Therefore, the probability of having such a gym in your city was previously high.
