In November 2021, Skallyk is the research breakthrough in Pokémon GO. And the selection is not to the trainers’ liking at all. Is the Pokémon really that bad?

What kind of Pokémon is that? Skallyk is of the types Dark and Flying and comes from the fifth generation of games. Its evolution is Grypheldis.
Skallyk is not new to the game; you can already find it in Pokémon GO for some time. However, until now, only as loot from the 12-km eggs.
How strong is Skallyk? The base form Skallyk has no notable strengths. Its evolution Grypheldis, on the other hand, is a good choice for trainer battles. In the overview from Gamepress.gg, Grypheldis scores 4 out of 5 points in the Super League, making it on par with Duodino, Flunschlick, and Alola Raichu.
In the Hyper League, Grypheldis also reaches 4 out of 5 points and is similarly strong as Feelinara, Tauboss, or Pixi.
Why is the community dissatisfied?
This is what trainers say: The announcement of the research breakthrough with Skallyk was poorly received by trainers. On reddit, Pokecrafter320 writes, “Skallyk as a research breakthrough. We have reached a new low.”
The comment is being actively discussed. Half-Right writes, “What? Skallyk is much better than most other research breakthroughs that have existed. Grypheldis is still relevant in the Super League and the Hyper League.”
But many other trainers counter that they have already seen and hatched the bird so often. “I have hatched so many diaper birds that I actually let out an extremely annoyed sigh when I saw the breakthrough. Skallyk is my most hated Pokémon lol,” writes SpookyKoops.
And many agree. Skallyk is so frequently available as loot in the 12-km eggs that it is unnecessary to receive more specimens through the research breakthrough.
- “I’m looking forward to the raid bosses, but the research breakthrough is bad. Skallyk is the one thing you don’t want to get from the 12-km eggs. What makes them [Niantic] think we want it in the research breakthrough?” asks killertapir on reddit.
- “Skallyk is a way, way better choice than Makabaja but also way, way worse than many other Pokémon they could have chosen. It’s a 5/10,” says Dahks on reddit.
This is the problem: Many trainers wish for a stronger research breakthrough that has greater significance in the game. Especially at the beginning of the research breakthroughs, the choices were quite different.
In September 2018, trainers were really happy about the research breakthrough because it gave players the legendary Pokémon Entei. There hasn’t been any sign of legendary Pokémon in the breakthroughs for a long time.
