In Pokémon GO the big Hoenn Tour took place last weekend. It received a lot of praise but also considerable criticism from the players. We at MeinMMO will show you the community’s reactions to the event and want to know in our survey how you liked it.
What kind of event is this? For the third year in a row, the big GO Tour took place last weekend. This time, the event revolved around the Hoenn region and, thus, the monsters of the 3rd generation of games.
The Hoenn Tour is one of the largest annual events in Pokémon GO, which is why many trainers were eagerly anticipating it. For the first time, they did not have to buy a paid ticket for it; instead, they could utilize numerous contents for free.
However, the community’s conclusion is sobering, as alongside some praise, there is also heavy criticism from the players. What bothered the players about this event and what positive highlights some pointed out, we have summarized for you below. Severe criticism of the Hoenn Tour
If you currently browse social networks, one thing can be found above all: considerable criticism of the Hoenn Tour. It is mainly criticized that despite the free event, many trainers had to invest coins and real money to obtain specific contents.
But the low shiny rate, missing bonuses and event attacks, as well as issues in the raids, also displeased the players. In the comments, one can read the following (via reddit.com):
- chiipotle: “The egg machine grind for the regional [Pokémon] was by far the worst part of the event. Freezing snow/rain all weekend, no bonus on the hatch distance, and adventure sync is still broken, so trying to hatch Relicanth was hell.”
- orlouge82: “The regionals that were exclusively hidden behind eggs were terrible. Niantic is switching to full pay-to-win here, as you have to buy egg incubators to have a reasonable chance of getting a shiny.”
- razisgosu: “The low shiny rate and the severe lack of things to do made the long two-day event feel completely uninteresting. I played for 5 hours today and got 0 shinys. And a perfect Groudon fled, thanks to the abnormally low ball count of this event.”
- manofsteel9979: “For an event that lasts 2 days with 8 hours each, the lure modules need to be renewed every 30 minutes! Incense lasts only for one hour, so you need at least 16 to last through the entire event. […] You get 2 raid passes when the average person needs at least 10-12 raids to acquire the required proto energy for both. […] Are there one or two regionals missing? Well, get ready to pay because they are hidden behind eggs, so get ready to grind incubators like crazy if you want even a vague chance of getting a shiny.”
Some trainers, like aes421, even go a step further in the comments and explain that they would prefer to buy a paid ticket for a better event. He writes (via reddit.com): “I prefer a better event with a ticket. I don’t mind spending $5-$15 for 2 days of fun. I also loved the Johto Tour and the Go Fest 2022.”
Why did you have to buy additional items?
Especially in the new proto raids, many players invested money and coins over the weekend. In these, you had to compete against Kyogre and Groudon to collect the coveted proto energy needed to trigger the protomorphosis. Because this had to be done to complete the special research “Legendenjagd”.
For a winning battle, you could receive up to 90 proto energy, but you need 400 to trigger the evolution. With the two free passes that were available over the weekend, you couldn’t progress much.
Similarly, the regional Pokémon of the Hoenn Tour were only obtainable from the rare 10 km eggs. If you wanted to secure the monsters and hoped for a shiny specimen, you had to hatch diligently, especially if you only had the free incubator.
And additional items, such as incense or lure modules, were also scarce during the event. As a result, many players had no choice but to invest valuable coins or even real money in the game to buy additional raid passes or egg incubators.
