In Pokémon GO you can currently encounter the Ultra Beast Katagami in raids, but the monster is not that easy to catch. We at MeinMMO looked into why trainers are having such difficulties and what they wish for.
Which Pokémon is it about? Since September 13, you can encounter the Ultra Beast Katagami in the Level 5 raids of the Northern Hemisphere. The Grass and Steel Pokémon from Generation 7, however, is causing trainers quite a headache, as it is harder to catch than expected. We show you the reason for this.

Why is Katagami so hard to catch?
Katagami is surprisingly small: After the release on September 13, many players were surprised by the size of the new Ultra Beast, as Katagami is smaller than many expected. Many memes and pictures from the catch mask showing the mini Pokémon can be found on social networks related to this raid boss. This includes a post by Jonteiz:
However, if you take a closer look at the data on Katagami, it becomes clear that the size of the raid boss is by no means a mistake in the game. The weight Pokémon was actually only 0.3 meters tall in the anime and weighed only 0.1 kg.
This is not surprising, as Katagami visually resembles a folded origami. It has a white, paper-like body with yellow and orange decorations.
Why is this a problem? The size of Katagami not only causes a special surprise for trainers, but also brings some challenges even after the raid.
Not only is the Pokémon itself quite tiny, but so is its catch circle. This means that it is more challenging for trainers to hit the Pokémon with the ball, and they are concerned that the monster might flee more easily.
This is also criticized by the reddit user Bacteriophag, who already complains about the small circle in the title of his post. He writes (via reddit.com): “Catching Katagami – What is this? A circle for ants?!”.
On reddit, he then explains further that he was looking forward to catching Katagami, especially because it is not that hard to defeat. However, after completing the first raid, he realized how small the Ultra Beast’s catch circle actually is and that it is not easy to hit the monster fabulously. He asks himself: “How are fabulous throws even possible on the current raid boss?”.
Even though he eventually caught the monster, he is annoyed that the likelihood of it fleeing is higher due to the poorer throws. Additionally, the catch is also possible with a larger catch circle for other small monsters, like the lake trio. For this reason, he wishes for an adjustment from Niantic.

Trainers wish for an important catching feature back
Bacteriophag is not alone with his opinion about the small catch circle, as many players have difficulties catching Katagami, as seen in the comments. However, many do not necessarily see the small catch circle as a problem, but rather a missing catch feature.
Which feature do trainers wish for? Unlike with the other Ultra Beasts before, trainers do not have special Ultra Balls for catching, but can only use the usual Premium Balls. The Ultra Balls were specially designed for catching these Ultra Beasts and are supposed to increase the likelihood of staying in the ball.
For this reason, this new catching feature tested in the GO Fest finale excited the community. It is not surprising that trainers now wish for this item back. As you can read in the reddit post:
- FigurineLambda: “I find it 100% acceptable that the circle is very small for historical reasons. If they want to respect the lore, then they should also give us Ultra Balls that were developed for situations like these!”
- rlopez89: “I’m not the best at fabulous throws, but I’m decent and great balls are mostly easy. I struggled to catch my first one, and that was after 15 golden raspberries. I wasted so many and almost didn’t catch it. I hope they bring it a bit closer, especially since we don’t have Ultra Balls, making it even harder to catch it.”
- IndependentAd4613: “With all other legendary ones, I usually hit fabulous throws easily. Maybe it just takes time… I just don’t see that I make most of the fabulous throws here, but only the great ones, which reduces the chances quite a bit, I think. I should check the percentage, but I guess the overall chance is about 1/3 lower. […] The other problem is the Ultra Balls. They are in the game, we have to use them once, we get another Ultra Beast and can’t use them?”
Are there ways to hit Katagami better? As the reddit user tkcom explains in the comments on reddit, the AR function in the game would be an alternative.
Unlike in the standard catch screen, the monster is shown through your camera in your environment. This way, you can self-regulate your distance to this monster and, for example, come closer to hit it better.
However, the comments also show that while it is hard to hit Katagami with a fabulous throw, it is not impossible. Silveranus reports on reddit that he hit the Ultra Beast with fabulous throws 7 times and it ultimately fled despite golden raspberries.
Thus, it still takes a bit of luck to secure the Pokémon even with a perfect throw.
