In Pokémon GO many trainers want to not only fill their Pokédex but also catch a lot of Shinies. However, when catching, you should especially consider one detail. What that is, we will show you here on MeinMMO.
What kind of Pokémon are we talking about? In Pokémon GO, one species of monster is particularly popular: Shinies. These are Pokémon that visually differ from their normal form based on their color.
However, these are generally quite difficult to find, which makes them even more desirable for trainers. Once you finally find a shiny specimen, you naturally want to catch it. How frustrating it is when it finally flees.
But this is exactly what happened to a trainer recently, and he shares his story on reddit. The community is convinced, however, that he made a crucial mistake while catching. Below, we show you what happened.
Trainer has bad luck catching a Shiny
As reddit user Minimimik explains in his reddit post, he encountered a Shiny Zobiris on August 18, 2022, during the Adventure Smoke. He definitely wanted to catch it, so he used an Ultra Ball and a golden Razz Berry. However, even though the Dark and Ghost Pokémon only had 93 CP, it fled right after the first throw.
According to the statistics he added to his post, the catch chance was actually not that bad. The monster had a flee rate of only 7%. That makes the loss even more frustrating.

But why couldn’t Minimimik secure the Pokémon when the catch rate is actually pretty high? The reddit community has a suspicion and shares it in the comments.
This mistake should be avoided when catching
The reddit community is convinced that Minimimik was moving too fast while catching. The reason for this could be the speed limit set by Niantic in the game. This is to prevent trainers from playing while driving.
What happens if you go too fast? If you exceed the speed tolerated by the game, you will receive a warning in which you must confirm that you are a passenger.
Additionally, you can click on Pokémon that you see during this time, but they are difficult to catch and usually flee after the first throw, just like described by Minimimik.
However, you can also be lucky and still catch one or two Pokémon, as minor_correction reports in the comments (via reddit.com): “I wouldn’t say it’s completely impossible – I’ve successfully caught some Shiny-Staralili, I just had to hit them on the first throw! But yes, it definitely reduces the chances.”
However, how high the maximum speed might be can only be speculated. In recent years, that value has changed repeatedly, and Niantic keeps quiet about specific values.
Criticism of the speed limit
What is it good for? In principle, the speed function is primarily meant to protect against accidents because those who play while driving do not pay as much attention to their surroundings.
This can quickly become dangerous, as 2Mew2BMew2 explains in the comments (via reddit.com): “It’s not about avoiding spoofing, but rather preventing car accidents. Many people still play PoGo while driving, and above a certain speed, you become a very dangerous weapon.”
Many players can relate to this and state in the comments that they would never play while behind the wheel themselves. But this also brings corresponding criticism.
This is being criticized: The function has its downsides and can be very frustrating, especially when you are not the one driving, because passengers or users of public transport like buses and trains are also affected. The game, however, cannot distinguish who is sitting behind the wheel.
And also, when walking or cycling too fast, the function occasionally takes effect. For this reason, some players wish for a way to play while traveling, provided that they are not driving themselves (via reddit.com):
- NikkinewAC: “This is so frustrating. I wish there was a way to prove that you’re safely in the passenger seat so that Pokémon Go can still be playable. I used to love playing while traveling, now it’s impossible.”
- The-Sooshtrain-Slut: “It’s like they forgot that public transport exists.”
- thewolfking45: “Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if you’re the passenger; if the game detects too high a speed, they just automatically flee. I’ve lost four Shinies this way because I was the passenger in a moving vehicle.”
- Fix_additional: “This is extremely frustrating. If you walk too slowly, nothing spawns. If you move too quickly, they run away. They need to fix the spawn issue. It’s like having to ride a bike in a straight line and stop every 30 seconds.”
Whether Niantic will find a solution for passengers and users of public transport in the future so that they can still catch Pokémon without problems while traveling remains to be seen for now.
Do you actually play Pokémon GO while driving? Or is that completely out of the question for you? And has a Shiny ever fled from you because you were going too fast? Feel free to share your opinions here on MeinMMO in the comments and exchange ideas with other trainers.
In the coming days, there will still be a lot happening in Pokémon GO. We will show you all events in August and which ones are worth it.
