A trainer in Pokémon GO is astonished by an unusual catch in the wild. He encountered a Slaking with a “???” CP display at level 43. After the catch, it immediately became his highest Pokémon.
What happened? On Reddit, trainer DonnieTheCatcher turns to the community of TheSilphRoad. He explains that he caught a particularly high Slaking in the wild. It had more than 4,000 CP – this behavior was new to him.
Over 380 comments have accumulated in the thread since its creation. How do Pokémon with such high CP come about?
High Slaking in Pokémon GO can encounter you as well
This is the catch: In the trainer’s screenshot, a Slaking can be seen in the wild. Next to the name, the CP is displayed with three question marks. Normally, a number should be visible here, but it is obscured.

The trainer explains that the Slaking displayed 4045 CP after the catch. “It immediately became the Pokémon with the highest CP in my collection,” explains DonnieTheCatcher. And that, even though the player has already reached level 43 and could have seen many Pokémon.
This label should remind you of your early days in Pokémon GO. When a Pokémon you want to catch has higher CP than any other Pokémon in your collection, then the CP of the wild Pokémon is obscured by “???”.
You will only see how many CP it actually has after the catch.
How this can happen: Usually, you won’t encounter Pokémon with the “???” designation anymore after playing for a few weeks.
In this case, you have to keep in mind that Slaking is the Pokémon that can reach the highest CP in Pokémon GO (excluding raids). Together with Regigigas, Mewtwo, Groudon, and Kyogre, it can break the significant barrier of 4,000 CP. Since the level cap was raised to level 50, trainers can push their Pokémon even higher. Many more are now reaching over 4,000 CP.
So it can even happen to you to encounter a Slaking with a “???” display in the wild when your highest Pokémon in the collection is just over 4,000 CP.
