The live events in Pokémon GO attract many players. Niantic has now shown how this affects the tourism of the cities.
These events are about: Live events in Niantic’s games have a long tradition. “For over 7 years,” Niantic has observed how thousands of players experienced weekends full of adventure together at the large-scale events.
This of course doesn’t only concern the Pokémon GO player base but also the games Ingress and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. However, it is the Pokémon trainers who have made a lasting impression with their engagement.
Pokémon events boost tourism
This is how live events have an impact: As Michael Steranka from Niantic announced, the events in 2019 were a complete success. Not only for the trainers who traveled for it: Steranka mentions on the official website of Niantic that the events have a “really positive impact on the places where we hold them” in the real world.
In 2019 alone, the events in Chicago, Montreal, and Dortmund reportedly generated approximately 249 million dollars in tourism revenue. It’s no wonder that Dortmund apparently hopes for another event.
This is how events proceed: It’s no surprise that live events boost tourism in the respective cities. After all, thousands of players from all over the world converge in the same place to catch special Pokémon.
In Dortmund, for example, the Westfalenpark became the event area for which players needed a ticket. There, trading, battling, and catching rare Pokémon took place. However, such an outing doesn’t necessarily end in the transformed area. Many players associate events with a weekend trip and book hotels in the respective city.
Once the event is over, the exploration begins. After all, the city offers many more PokéStops that can lead you to attractions, restaurants, or places like museums. Players often spend several days there to explore and experience the event cities.
In 2019, new cities were allowed to apply for events, which has also led to the current newly announced events. In addition, Steranka announced further events for 2020 – but when and where exactly they will take place has not yet been disclosed.
