Kyogre and Groudon are back as current legendary raid bosses in Pokémon GO. Who are the raids worth it for?
How long are Kyogre and Groudon available in raids? The two legendary monsters returned with the start of the current Hoenn event and have been occupying level 5 raids since then. However, this only lasts until Sunday, January 24 at 8 PM, then it’s over again. By the way, on Sunday, Minun and Plusle are boosted for the current catching challenge.
You only have a little time to catch Kyogre and Groudon. But it can be worth it.
Raids bring strong attackers
That’s why the raids are worth it: The raids are generally worth it if you haven’t caught either Kyogre or Groudon already. The two monsters have been part of Pokémon GO for a long time, yet especially new players probably haven’t caught either of the legendaries. If you belong to that group, you should definitely complete the raids, as both are among the best attackers in Pokémon GO.
- Kyogre is in the top 3 of water attackers in raids and has only two special monsters ahead of it: Mega-Blastoise and Shadow Swampert. Leaving those special forms aside, Kyogre with Waterfall and Surf is the top choice, especially against fire, rock, and ground type monsters.
- Groudon is the best ground type attacker when equipped with Mud Shot and Earthquake. It is particularly strong against electric, rock, poison, steel, and fire monsters.
Additionally, both can be caught as Shiny. If you want to try your luck here, you should also aim to complete as many raids as possible since the chance of shiny versions is quite small. You can find the right counters against Groudon and Kyogre here. With three trainers, you can defeat both monsters, but it works better and faster with four or more players.
A good argument for the current raids is also the ongoing Hoenn celebration research event. If you catch two Groudon and two Kyogre, you’ll get an extra 10 candies for both monsters. It’s worth it if you want to improve them.
Another point, which may be the most important for some, is only indirectly related to the two.
Rayquaza bonus from research
Raids bring you a Rayquaza: As part of the Hoenn celebration research, you get a bonus encounter with a Rayquaza that knows the move Hurricane for completing it. Additionally, you need to catch 30 Pokémon on top of the Kyogre-Groudon duo – that’s also easily done.
You should definitely secure Rayquaza since it’s one of the best attackers in the game.
- Rayquaza is the best dragon attacker in the game, excluding the special forms Shadow Salamence and -Dragonite as well as Mega-Charizard X. If you equip it with Dragon Tail and Outrage, it takes the top position. It is also a strong flying attacker when using appropriate flying moves.
An advantage: You don’t have to go through another raid battle against the monster but can simply catch it from the encounter. Plus, with a bit of luck, you can also get the black Shiny variant. As an additional bonus, there are 3,000 XP and a silver pinap berry.
So if you are already tired of Kyogre or Groudon, you should at least consider whether a bonus Rayquaza would benefit your team.
