The research breakthrough for May and June in Pokémon GO is known. In these 2 months, you have the chance to get 4 different Pokémon, all of which can be Shiny.
Which Pokémon are there? In May and June, you have the chance to encounter old friends. But also two Pokémon, which previously only appeared in raids, are now coming to the research breakthrough.
- Lugia
- Ho-Oh
- Latias
- Latios
That’s why it is well-received: Many players celebrate the new research breakthrough, as finally every Pokémon has a use. This was not the case in the past months.
This is how well the research breakthrough in May is received
This is why the research breakthrough is celebrated: In the past months, there was always at least one Pokémon in the breakthrough that seemed useless to many players.

In the past months, those were for example the Pokémon of the Regi Trio. They are all quite weak and cannot be Shiny. Furthermore, there has not been a legendary cat in the breakthrough for months, except for November. Raikou, Entei, and Suicune are now disappearing.
Ideal for Shiny hunters: You have the chance for a Shiny with every breakthrough in May and June. Each of the 4 Pokémon is available in its shiny form. Recently, one could battle Latios in a raid week. Now you don’t have to sacrifice passes to get the Shiny.
How do I get a research breakthrough? To get this, you need to complete field research for 7 days and collect the reward for it. They don’t have to be 7 consecutive days. If you complete a quest on 7 days, you get the chance for one of the four Pokémon.
This is what the players say: The trainers largely celebrate the new research breakthrough. There are various positive comments on Reddit:
- Belofello: Finally no more Suicune!
- am_dog: All 4 Pokémon have a Shiny chance in the breakthrough? I think it’s great! I didn’t expect Latios so soon after the raid week.
- Millennium1995: The end of Suicune’s reign of terror!
- randomFUCKfromcherry: I was too lazy to get Latios last week, so this makes me happy. Plus, all 4 have a Shiny chance, that’s cool.
- c0r3yz: I’m excited that the Regis are no longer on the breakthrough list!
