In Pokémon GO there was a research day as part of the adventure week yesterday, June 12, 2022. This was well received by many trainers, but the place of residence plays a crucial role. We at MeinMMO have taken a look at what happened.
Which event is it about? In recent days, the adventure week ran in Pokémon GO, culminating in a mini-event in the form of a research day with Schilterus and Koknodon.
So on June 12th, you could encounter changed spawns in the wild for four hours, meet wild Amarino and Balgoras, and complete limited research tasks.
Now the research day is over and trainers are sharing their conclusions about the mini-event on social media. We have looked at what was particularly praised and what the gaming experience has to do with the place of residence.
“The research day was one of the most entertaining events”
After the GO Fest 2022 was heavily criticized in the community due to poor shiny yields, Niantic was able to score points with the research day. Especially the shiny yield was great for many. But in general, the event is appreciated on reddit.

- mybham: “I have always enjoyed all kinds of research days. Today I walked for 2 hours at my own pace and thought ‘ok, that’s it. Time to do something else’. A monthly research day with any Pokémon would be cool.”
- TheTraveller: “We were just talking about how it was definitely more fun than the GO Fest. I know I’m privileged because I play in a fairly large city with many PokéStops. But still, the event made me go to areas I haven’t been to in years, and I made many (for me) new stops.
It made me laugh though that in 3 1/2 hours I caught one more shiny than I did during the entire (paid) GO Fest last weekend. And despite all the walking, today was much more relaxing and fun, without bugs.”

During the GO Fest or other events with wild spawns, you often have to hurry to catch as many shinies as you want. During these events, you get your tasks and want to complete them before heading to the next PokéStop. I walked my main route for my city on foot and managed to complete every single task in that one round.”
- NegativeCreeq: “The game is best when you don’t have to rely on others. This ongoing pressure on the community makes the game worse. I enjoyed today, decent spawns, good shiny rate. The tasks were quite chill.”
Criticism of the research day – “They just don’t care”
Disadvantages for rural players: Especially for trainers in rural areas, the event was only partially a success. This is mainly because there are fewer PokéStops there than in cities. Since the research day was designed for trainers to encounter and solve the specific limited tasks, the number compared to places with many stops is significantly lower.
Even though the chance of encountering a gleaming Koknodon or Schilterus from the tasks was relatively high during the research day, these players also need a bit more luck due to the lower number of opportunities.
This has also been criticized by some players, which is why many wish for solutions from Niantic for the future. So does Ausjam:
This type of research day is very strenuous for players who do not have access to many PokéStops. I live on an island with 8 PokéStops. There are plenty of spawns, a few gyms, etc., which makes the island a reasonable place to play, but after a 10-minute walk to complete these 8 quests (no shiny) …, am I done?
I’m sure players in rural areas feel the same way – unlike city players who can explore and rummage around at will. Many other research days featured long special research tasks, where you had loads of chances for a shiny just by catching and playing (Snubbull, Marill, Bidiza, maybe Owei etc.?), but limiting the chances to PokéStops harms a large part of the player base.
After 5 years, it would be nice if Niantic could do better.

- meow0101: “I wonder why they didn’t come up with a mechanic that refreshes the PokéStops with tasks during these types of events or on community days every half hour or hour, especially since they like to talk so much about creating ‘community’. These events encourage people to go to different places.”
- Xygnux: “The funny thing is that there was already a solution for this. A research day used to consist of 20 pages of time-limited quests received upon logging in. Like the Snubbull day. Niantic would just prefer to sacrifice rural players and weekend workers for their vision.”
- 000666777888: “They have to know. They just don’t care. They are not interested in making their player experience good. It wouldn’t be that hard to allow tasks to be reallocated at such events, or even to allow this only in areas with lower stop density. Or they could add additional temporary stops so that every cell, no matter how big it is supposed to be, suddenly has at least x stops. They add these temporary stops during GO Fest events and the like. They just don’t care.”
Poor spawn rate of Amarino and Balgoras
But there is another point of criticism regarding the event. Players would have liked more spawns of Amarino and Balgoras. The two dinos had previously only been available for a few days through research or from 7 km eggs.
As part of the research day, they were supposed to spawn in the wild for the first time. However, they were only found rarely there (via reddit.com).
- mybham: “Apart from that, Amarino and Balgoras were not okay, too rare. Niantic showed them in the picture of the research day and made the following announcement: Balgoras and Amarino will appear more frequently in the wild. The bold words not only create a false impression but are absolutely unnecessary since the two don’t spawn in the wild anyway, fulfilling the probability of greater than zero means ‘more frequently.'”
- Carrisonfire: “I haven’t seen Amarino anywhere, but Balgoras has spawned everywhere for me.”
- stuw: “I must admit that I am lucky to be able to walk to a large city center (and thus hundreds of stops), but this was one of the most fun events I’ve done in a long time. The only downside was the rarity of Amarino and Balgoras spawns – in the hour I played, I only saw 3 Balgoras that could spawn.”
