For the Pokémon GO Community Day in December, many monsters and thus also attacks are expected. Which ones are worth it?
This is what the event brings: The December Community Day is a bit different than those in other months. It will run for two days, on December 12 and 13, and focuses on more than just one Pokémon.
Instead, it brings a lot of monsters – those that featured during the Community Days in 2019 and 2020. This means that you can secure a lot of event attacks. We will look at all the attacks in detail.
How do I get the attacks? You will receive the attacks when you evolve the corresponding Pokémon during the event period. So, if you want a Rihornior with Rock Wrecker, you must evolve Rizeros between Saturday, December 12 at 06:00 and Sunday, December 13 at 22:00.
How strong are the attacks for Community Day
What is this list? Here you will find an evaluation of all Community Day attacks. These were created through various calculations, for example, based on the PvP rankings from “PvPoke“, the list of the best attackers and attack overviews from the portal “Gamepress“.
- In category 1, you will find the monsters that you should definitely catch at the event.
- In category 2, you will find alternatives that will also help you in battles but are a bit weaker.
- Many C-Day monsters received attacks with a focus on the PvP league – most of them can be found in category 3.
- And in category 4, you will find attacks that can be taken for collector’s purposes but are not necessarily needed.
Important: Crypto-Pokémon and Mega Evolutions were initially not considered for this ranking.
1 – These attacks you should definitely catch
Here you will find monsters that are really strong and count among the top attackers in Pokémon GO. You should definitely catch these Pokémon on Community Day – their special attack makes them significantly more useful than they were before.
Rihornior with Rock Wrecker: The Community Day with Rihorn originally took place in February 2020, after this was chosen as the Event Pokémon by fan voting. Players definitely wanted Rihorn as a monster for Community Day back then – and this time, its final evolution Rihornior should also be among the main targets on Community Day.

The monster can learn the exclusive attack “Rock Wrecker” again during the event. With this move, Rihornior ranks alongside Rameidon among the best rock attackers and should not be missing in any Pokémon collection. Make sure to catch it this weekend if you still don’t have it, or collect candies to further strengthen your old Rihornior.
Required Pokémon: Rihorn
Brutalanda with Outrage: The best dragon attackers in the game are not so easy to obtain. The current number 1, the black and white Kyurem, is not yet in the game. And number 2, Rayquaza, can only be caught sporadically in raids.
But you can find the third-best dragon attacker in the wild during the December Community Day – or at least its pre-evolution: If you collect enough Dratini candies, you can secure Brutalanda. With Outrage, it also gets a very good dragon move. Combined with Dragon Tail, Brutalanda belongs in every dragon team, is a strong all-rounder, and should definitely be caught.
Required Pokémon: Dratini
Lohgock with Blast Burn: During Community Day, several starters with traditionally very strong attacks are back. This includes the fire attacker Lohgock. It learns the move Blast Burn this weekend.
The strong fire move is very useful, making it one of the best fire attackers. Although it still falls behind monsters like Reshiram, Lavados, or Skelabra, it is definitely worth it. If you don’t have the combination yet, be sure to grab it.
Required Pokémon: Flemmli
Sumpex with Hydro Cannon: The ground and water starter is a real all-rounder. It is not only very popular in the PvP league but also one of the best water attackers in the game. On Community Day, Sumpex learns Hydro Cannon again, and anyone who doesn’t have one with this attack should secure it.
Required Pokémon: Hydropi
Impergator with Hydro Cannon: Anyone without Impergator with Hydro Cannon should secure one. Although it still falls behind monsters like Kingler, Kyogre, or Sumpex, with this move, the crocodile ranks among the best water attackers in Pokémon GO.
Required Pokémon: Karnimani
Gewaldro with Frenzy Plant: Another starter, another strong Pokémon: When Gewaldro learns Frenzy Plant, it becomes one of the best grass attackers. Only Roserade ranks ahead of Gewaldro among grass attackers. Although it does not take a lot of hits, it deals considerable damage. Make sure to grab the attack if you’re still missing it.
Required Pokémon: Geckarbor
2 – Strong Alternatives
In this category, you will find three more monsters that are still strong but do not quite belong to the top tier of Community Day.
Chelterrar with Frenzy Plant: Thanks to the attack, Chelterrar is among the best grass attackers, although monsters like Roserade, Bisaflor, and Gewaldro still deal a bit more damage. Chelterrar can hold a lot and should definitely be caught with Frenzy Plant if you want to build a strong grass team.
Required Pokémon: Chelast
Panferno with Blast Burn: Panferno is a good fire attacker with this attack, although there are still some better alternatives. Nevertheless, a Panferno with Blast Burn can be useful for raids if you don’t have every top attacker in multiple copies.
Required Pokémon: Panflam
Impoleon with Hydro Cannon: Impoleon also learns a classic starter attack and thus becomes a good water attacker. Basically, the same goes for Impoleon as for Panferno – just in the water area.
Required Pokémon: Plinfa
3 – These monsters are more for PvP
In category 3, you will find monsters that are not necessarily the best choice for battling against gyms and raids. They received attacks for Community Day that are mainly supposed to be useful in PvP. We took a closer look at the monsters using the rankings from PvPoke.
Garados with Waterfall: For gyms and raids, you are better off with Hydro Pump on Garados. However, Waterfall is an interesting move for Garados in PvP. If you spend a lot of time in the Great and Master leagues, the move is worth it.
Required Pokémon: Karpador
Gengar with Shadow Punch: Gengar is known as a glass cannon that deals a lot of damage but goes down quickly. With Shadow Punch, Gengar receives another ghost attack, but Shadow Ball is usually more suitable. Only in PvP might Shadow Punch provide some benefit since it charges faster than Shadow Ball. Gengar is often used in the Great League, and it can secure wins against popular monsters like Cresselia, Togekiss, or Melmetal.
Required Pokémon: Nebulak
Tengulist with Bullet Seed: In raids and gyms, Tengulist does not help much even with Bullet Seed. In the Super League, however, the move is an interesting alternative, although Tengulist is also useful with its regular Body Slam attack. It is a good fighter against monsters like Azumarill or Galarian Flunschlik.
Required Pokémon: Samurzel
Guardevoir & Gallade with Synchronoise: Overall, Synchronoise is a decent move for the two Kirlia evolutions, but for the “best psychic attackers”, there are better alternatives. In PvP, you can at least try Guardevoir in the Great and Master leagues, especially in its shadow variant. It can secure wins against Giratina or Sumpex. In contrast, Gallade is not really useful.
Required Pokémon: Trasla
Bibor with Drill Run: In gyms and raids, the ground attack Drill Run does not help you much. In the PvP Super League, however, the move is somewhat interesting since it presents an unusual combination with the other Bibor attacks. However, Bibor is not really a top choice here either.
Required Pokémon: Hornliu
Glurak with Flame Burst: Glurak does not receive a special charged attack for Community Day but rather a fast attack. Flame Burst is a very fast dragon-type move that does not really help you in PvE. However, in PvP, you can surprise your opponent with it, even if Glurak is not an absolute top PvP monster. In the Great League, it can secure wins against Cresselia, Togekiss, or Cavalanzas.
Required Pokémon: Glumanda
4 – Monsters for Collectors
Here you will find monsters that don’t necessarily become better with the event attacks, or that don’t fit into the meta of Pokémon GO overall. However, there is a possibility that these monsters may become interesting with other attacks. Nevertheless, you can also secure some shinies here!
Letarking with Body Slam: Letarking has the problem that its fast move Yawn does no damage. As an attacker, it is generally rather useless. As a defender, Body Slam can serve as a neutral alternative to the fairy move Play Rough against fighting Pokémon.
Required Pokémon: Bummelz
Simsala with Counter: The psychic Pokémon Simsala learns the fast move Counter on Community Day, which is not worth it in raids and gyms. It is a fighting move, and Simsala is better equipped with psychic attacks. In PvP, however, Counter is a bit more useful than in PvE, but Simsala still won’t become a really good candidate for the league.
Required Pokémon: Abra
Libelldra with Earth Power: Libelldra is a good ground attacker, even if it does not belong to the absolute top choice. Earth Power is a decent option that can also be used in PvP. However, generally speaking, there are better alternatives in both areas.
Required Pokémon: Knacklion
Porygon-Z with Tri Attack: Tri Attack is a somewhat strong move for Porygon-Z, but neither in PvE nor in PvP does the monster play a major role. More of a case for the Pokédex than for your battle teams.
Required Pokémon: Porygon
Mamutel with Ancient Power: Mamutel is among the best ice attackers and is much better equipped in this area. Ancient Power Mamutel is rare but not particularly useful. So, it is best to get the candies but teach Mamutel another attack.
Required Pokémon: Quiekel
Elevoltek with Flamethrower: Elevoltek is among the best electric attackers, but like during the double Community Day with Magmar, it learns an unusual attack. Flamethrower does not improve Elevoltek, and it is better to focus on electric attacks. More for collectors.
Required Pokémon: Elektek (Elekid)
Magbrandt with Thunderbolt: Magbrandt has the same issue as Elevoltek: Instead of a genuinely useful attack, it learns Thunderbolt on Community Day. Interesting for collectors, but less so for battles.
Required Pokémon: Magmar (Magby)
What about the 2018 attacks? Some of the Pokémon had a Community Day back in 2018, for which they could learn a special attack. These will not be available again this December. However, Niantic promises in the blog post that they will be learnable at a later date.
The Community Day is also perfect for leveling up. This applies to players from level 40 onwards as well. How to progress here is shown in our level guide towards level 50.
