On June 28, 2021, the Element Cup will start in the PvP League of Pokémon GO. In this cup, the Pokémon of the basic elements Grass, Fire, and Water will be in the spotlight. What you need to know and which Pokémon are worth using in battle have been summarized for you by MeinMMO.
When does the Element Cup start? The Element Cup starts on June 28, 2021, at 10:00 PM. You have two weeks from then to participate in this cup, until it ends on July 12, 2021, at 10:00 PM.
What kind of cup is this? As the name Element Cup suggests, this cup is about elemental Pokémon. The Pokémon used must correspond to the types Grass, Fire, or Water, just like the starter Pokémon from the original series.
Moreover, as Niantic has stated, these Pokémon must be the respective basic evolution (via pokemongolive.com). However, the monster must still be able to evolve. Additionally, it must not exceed a cap of 500 CP.
As an extra reward, you will receive double Stardust for victories and completing battles during the Element Cup.
The best Pokémon for the Element Cup in overview
Since you only have a limited selection of usable Pokémon during the Element Cup, you should familiarize yourself with the strengths and weaknesses of your team beforehand. You will often encounter similar monsters among your opponents in the PvP League.
As this cup is a very special battle league, you cannot rely on the familiar tier list for the PvP League. With the help of the overview from PvPoke, we have compiled a list for you below (via pvpoke.com). This includes the best attackers and their movesets for use in this cup by type.
The best attackers of type Grass
| Pokémon | Movesets |
| Waumboll | Charm, Vine Whip, Seed Bomb |
| Bisasam | Vine Whip, Seed Bomb, Sludge Bomb |
| Endivie | Vine Whip, Body Slam, Vine Whip |
| Crypto-Myrapla | Leaf Blade, Sludge Bomb, Seed Bomb |
| Crypto-Chelast | Leaf Blade, Body Slam, Seed Bomb |
Waumboll and Bisasam impress the most as representatives of the Grass type. But Endivie and the Crypto variants of Myrapla and Chelast are also suitable Pokémon to excel in the Element Cup. If you don’t have any of these Pokémon with an appropriate CP on hand, you can also fall back on other Grass Pokémon like Knospi or Owei according to PvPoke (via pvpoke.com).
The best attackers of type Fire
| Pokémon | Movesets |
| Vulpix | Ember, Fire Spin, Body Slam |
| Fukano | Ember, Body Slam, Flamethrower |
| Floink | Ember, Body Slam, Nitro Charge |
| Schneckmag | Rock Slide, Stone Edge, Nitro Charge |
| Flampion | Fire Fang, Fire Punch, Nitro Charge |
As for the Fire type, Vulpix, Fukano, and Floink can hold their own in the Element Cup in Pokémon GO. However, Schneckmag and Flampion are also two suitable candidates. You should avoid using other representatives of the Fire type, such as Grillmak or Leufeo.
The best attackers of type Water
| Pokémon | Movesets |
| Piccolente | Wing Attack, Thunder Shock, Bubble Beam |
| Lampi | Spark, Thunderbolt, Bubble Beam |
| Jurob | Ice Shard, Water Gun, Ice Beam |
| Tentacha | Poison Sting, Wrap, Bubble Beam |
| Loturzel | Leaf Blade, Energy Ball, Bubble Beam |
Even though Piccolente and Lampi are already seen as clear favorites of the Water type before the start of the Element Cup, Jurob, Tentacha, and Loturzel can also hold their own well in battles against other Pokémon. Alternatively, Felino and Flegmon are also good candidates. Based on the previous event “A Very Slow Discovery”, you should have enough Flegmon candies available for leveling up.
Which Pokémon are particularly worth it in the Element Cup?
Piccolente
During the Element Cup, you will likely frequently encounter the Pokémon Piccolente. It belongs to the Water and Flying types. Due to its attacks, it will be one of the most popular monsters in this battle league.
For instance, you can first perform the fast charge attack Bubble Beam to prompt your opponent to use their shields as quickly as possible. With the help of the charge attacks Sturzflug or Aero-Ass, you can eventually defeat the Pokémon.
However, you should also be prepared to defeat it as well. Here, you should preferably use the Pokémon Lampi. This is a Water and Electric type and thus possesses the corresponding attacks as well. Since Piccolente has a weakness to Electric attacks, this is your chance to win.
Lampi
A Pokémon that one might not expect in the list of the best attackers is Lampi. This monster belongs to the Water and Electric types. Due to this typing, it is a particularly interesting Pokémon for use in the Element Cup. Its Electric attacks are especially effective against Water Pokémon.
Thus, Lampi presents a real challenge for Piccolente. Since it also belongs to the Water type, it is also very effective against Fire-type Pokémon.
Waumboll
Waumboll also poses a significant challenge for trainers in the Element Cup. This Pokémon is not only a Grass type but also a Fairy type. Therefore, it can use Fairy moves in addition to Grass moves.
From previous PvP battles, it can be said that opponents have often had a difficult time defeating Fairy-type Pokémon. The best counter to this is to use Poison attacks. Waumboll has a special weakness against these.
Bisasam
The most typical representative of Grass Pokémon is Bisasam. It belongs to the original monsters and is one of the three starter Pokémon. Not only because of that, it will be a popular Pokémon for the Element Cup in Pokémon GO. Its attacks can also convince in battle.
With the charge attack Seed Bomb, you can quickly deal corresponding damage to the opponent. Moreover, it is resistant to most Grass and Water Pokémon. The weaknesses of Bisasam are Fire, Ice, Psychic, and Flying attacks.
Vulpix
The Pokémon Vulpix belongs to the Fire type. It has the charge attack Meteorologist (Fire) with which you can quickly deal solid damage to the opponent. Even though the other attacks might cause a bit more damage, they take significantly longer to charge.
For this reason, it is more sensible to use Meteorologist (Fire) as a fast charge attack. According to an analysis by reddit user JRE47, Vulpix should be able to defeat about two-thirds of the Pokémon in the Element Cup (via reddit.com). Vulpix is particularly weak against Water, Ground, and Rock attacks.
Floink
Floink also belongs to the Fire-type Pokémon. This small monster has the two fire charge moves Nitro Charge and Flamethrower, along with the quick charge move Body Slam of Normal type. With this combination of moves, Floink has the advantage over both opposing Grass-type and Fire-type Pokémon.
Even though other monsters, like Vulpix or Fukano, can perform significantly better in the battle league according to PvPoke, Floink is still a solid monster that you can use in the Element Cup (via pvpoke.com). You can also use the upcoming community day in July with Floink to gather some candies to help you level up.
