In Pokémon GO, Tyranitar is often put in the arena, but this is completely the wrong choice. We will tell you why.
When you look in Pokémon GO at the arenas, you will often see a Tyranitar alongside Heiteira, Snorlax, or Slaking. At first glance, this also looks mighty, as it has a lot of CP and is always a good choice in raids.
However, the first impression is deceiving because Tyranitar is a really bad choice in arenas. There is hardly a Pokémon that can be defeated more easily.
Why Tyranitar is so bad as a defender
How to counter Tyranitar? The Pokémon is of the Rock and Dark type. Fighting is very effective against both types. Tyranitar has a double weakness against this type.
Besides Fighting, the following types are also effective: Water, Grass, Bug, Ground, Fairy, and Steel. So you have many options to counter it.
What is the problem with Tyranitar? Simply because Tyranitar has so many weaknesses, it can be easily countered. Almost every Pokémon is effective against Tyranitar and can defeat it quickly.
Moreover, Machamp is the most used attacker in arenas, as it is also effective against the top defenders. A Machamp with Fighting moves needs only a few seconds to take down a Tyranitar.
To demonstrate this with exact numbers, we show you a battle simulation of a Machamp against a Tyranitar:

You can see that the Tyranitar is defeated after just 11.6 seconds. The Machamp, on the other hand, still has more than half of its HP left.
For comparison, let’s do a simulation with the best defender in the game: Heiteira.

Here you can see that Heiteira is only defeated after 32.8 seconds. It takes about 3 times as long.
What can you put in the arena instead? Almost anything is better than Tyranitar. The top defenders, however, are:
- Heiteira
- Chansey
- Snorlax

Even Pokémon that you only put in the arena to send to the professor afterwards are often better than Tyranitar. So either put really good defenders in the arenas or save potions and put in Pokémon that you can delete afterwards.
What are your favorite defenders?
