Originally, the event was supposed to start at 2:00 PM. But an error caused the developers to start the event in all regions at 11:00 AM and run it as usual until 5:00 PM. Niantic announced this in a tweet .
The bonuses: The following bonuses are mentioned by Niantic in the official blog post:
- You will receive up to five additional raid passes for free if you spin the photo discs at gyms.
- The chance of encountering a shiny Gyarados is increased.
Here’s the tip: You cannot further influence the shiny chances. However, trainers have already shared tips on how to get 8 instead of 5 raid passes for the Raid Day with Mega-Gyarados.
Shiny Gyarados: With luck, you will encounter shiny Gyarados after a raid. A shiny version of this Pokémon is highly sought after by trainers because its appearance is very appealing.

The fact that the chances of getting a shiny for this raid event are increased is a reason for many trainers to participate. At least to use the free passes that are given as gifts. Maybe you will get lucky and secure a shiny version.
However, it’s not just because of its appearance that this Pokémon is worth your while. Gyarados is one of the strongest water attackers that Pokémon GO has to offer. Participating can therefore be quite valuable for you.
