For the 4th birthday of Pokémon GO, an event marathon is starting. You can expect new Pokémon, research, and great rewards for the GO Fest 2020. MeinMMO will show you what is happening.
What’s new? Niantic announced a major birthday event on June 25, 2020, that will run over several weeks. In the weeks leading up to GO Fest 2020, they want to spend an exciting summer with the players. For Niantic, this means:
- New Pokémon
- Limited-time research
- Huge rewards
Worldwide, you can participate in three weekly limited-time research tasks. You do not need a ticket for GO Fest 2020.
If you complete these, you unlock additional Pokémon for the GO Fest 2020 in July.
Event for the 4th birthday of Pokémon GO
When does it run? From Friday, July 3, 2020, at 8 AM to Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 10 PM (local time).
What happens there? Special Pokémon appear in the wild, in eggs, and in raids. This includes flying Pikachu – even as shiny.
- Flying Pokémon and Pokémon with party hats appear in the wild, in eggs, and in raids
- Shiny Dusselgur appears in the wild
- Piccolente from Gen 5 appears for the first time in Pokémon GO – In the wild and 5-km eggs
- Flying Pikachu in the wild and in eggs, even as shiny
- Research for takeoff is available for all trainers – This research is designed to collect as much XP as possible. Just log in during the event period to receive it
- Snapshots with special Pokémon encounters
The weekly research
Each of the three research tasks runs with a specific theme. You can expect new rewards and bonuses everywhere.
Week 1 – Skill Challenge and Event
When does it run? The first challenge week runs concurrently with the event celebrating the fourth birthday of Pokémon GO. From Friday, July 3, 2020, at 8 AM to Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at 10 PM (local time).
The Challenge: In the challenges, you should prove your skills that you learned over the years in Pokémon GO. This includes throwing technique.
- Complete all three tasks of the weekly “Limited-Time Research” – “Skill Challenge for GO Fest” to encounter Piccolente and the flying Pikachu, receive a star piece, and more
- If the following number of trainers from the same team completes the “Limited-Time Research”, the corresponding Pokémon will appear at Pokémon GO Fest 2020.
- One million trainers from Team Instinct: Palimpalim
- One million trainers from Team Wisdom: Mamolida
- One million trainers from Team Courage: Chaneira
What is special: If you complete the weekly “Limited-Time Research” – “Weekly Skill Challenge for GO Fest”, you will receive the “Top Skill Challenge for GO Fest”.
This challenge presents you with difficult tasks that you can complete to earn bragging rights. However, you do not need to complete these tasks for your “Limited-Time Research” to count towards the Pokémon GO Fest 2020 goals.
A special weekend: In 5-star raids, starting July 3, you will reunite with an old acquaintance. Ho-Oh returns. From July 3, 2020, at 8 AM until Monday, July 6, 2020, at 10 AM (local time), you will encounter the legendary Pokémon in T-5 raids.
Week 2 – Battle Challenge
When does it run? The Battle Challenge for week 2 starts on July 10 at 8 AM and runs until July 15 at 10 PM local time.
The Challenge: This week, your battle skills will be put to the test.
- Complete all three tasks of the weekly “Limited-Time Research” – “Battle Challenge for GO Fest” to encounter Kicklee and Absol, receive a super rocket radar, and more
- If the following number of trainers from the same team completes the “Limited-Time Research” this week, the corresponding Pokémon will appear at Pokémon GO Fest 2020.
- One million trainers from Team Instinct: Kastadur
- One million trainers from Team Wisdom: Alola-Sleima
- One million trainers from Team Courage: Alola-Knogga
What is special: If you complete the weekly “Limited-Time Research” – “Weekly Battle Challenge for GO Fest”, you will receive the “Top Battle Challenge for GO Fest”.
This challenge presents you with difficult tasks that you can complete to earn bragging rights. You do not need to complete these tasks for your “Limited-Time Research” to count towards the Pokémon GO Fest 2020 goals.
A special event: On Sunday, July 12, a battle event will take place from 11 AM to 2 PM local time. More details will follow.
Week 3 – Friendship Challenge + Event
When does it run? From Friday, July 17, 2020, at 8 AM to Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at 10 PM (local time). At the same time, the summer event will take place.
The Event: “Summery” Pokémon appear in the wild, in eggs, and in raids. You also get the chance to encounter shiny Knofensa.
For the first time in Pokémon GO, Lilminip from the 5th generation appears. In sunny weather, it appears in the wild or hatches from 5-km eggs.
In the wild, Pikachu that are “well prepared for summer” appear. Additionally, snapshots here again bring a surprise.
The Challenge: This week you should appreciate your buddies and fellow trainers. So stock up on snacks and gifts.

- If the following number of trainers from the same team completes the “Limited-Time Research” this week, the corresponding Pokémon will appear at Pokémon GO Fest 2020.
- One million trainers from Team Instinct: Togetic
- One million trainers from Team Wisdom: Dratini
- One million trainers from Team Courage: Lichtel
What is special: If you complete the weekly “Limited-Time Research” – “Weekly Friendship Challenge for GO Fest”, you will receive the “Top Friendship Challenge for GO Fest”.
This will present you with some difficult tasks that you can complete to earn bragging rights. You do not need to complete these tasks for your “Limited-Time Research” to count towards the Pokémon GO Fest 2020 goals.
