Today, on February 27, 2024, the Spotlight Hour with Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew starts in Pokémon GO. In this guide, we will show you everything about the times, shinies, and the bonuses of this short event.
What kind of event is this? Every Tuesday evening, Pokémon GO launches a Spotlight Hour for you. For a duration of 60 minutes, a Pokémon is highlighted along with a bonus. The combination of Pokémon and bonus is determined by Niantic at the beginning of each month.
Today, you will encounter the Pokémon Sandshrew from the first generation, along with its Alolan form. In its normal form, it is a Ground type and can evolve into Sandslash. In its Alolan form, Sandshrew is an Ice and Steel type.
Spotlight Hour on February 27 – Start, Shiny and Bonuses
When does it start? As you may know from previous Spotlight Hours, the event today begins at 6:00 PM local time. The content will be active for one hour and will end at 7:00 PM.
What bonuses are active? During the event time, you will see wild Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew in almost every corner of Pokémon GO. If you want to attract even more of these Pokémon, you can use incense.
Additionally, you will receive double the amount of candy for sending Pokémon.
There was some confusion regarding the bonus, as the German X page of Pokémon GO reports “double trade candies,” while the English X page of Pokémon GO mentions bonuses of “double sending candies” and “increased chance for XL special candies when sending.”
In the meantime, Niantic support has clarified that there will only be double sending candies as a bonus.

Can you catch shiny Sandshrew? Yes, the shiny form of Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew has been around in Pokémon GO for a long time. With a bit of luck, you can catch them during the event today. However, keep in mind that the chances for shinies are not increased during Spotlight Hours.
Is the Spotlight Hour worth it today? Unfortunately, the Pokémon are not very recommendable as fighters. While Alolan Sandslash has its small niche in trainer battles in the Great League, it does not really shine otherwise. So use the hour mainly to tidy up your Pokémon collection and gather more candies for it.
