What’s new? On Wednesday, March 24, Pokémon GO presented the events for the upcoming month of April. This includes the breakthrough for your field research, raid hours, spotlight hours, limited research, and more.
In this article, we will discuss the research breakthrough and show you which spotlight hours you should not miss. Additionally, we will cover which events will start. This way, you can already keep the important dates free in your calendar.
Research breakthrough in April 2021 at Pokémon GO
Which Pokémon is it? As a research breakthrough, you will receive the Pokémon Quabbel in April, which belongs to the types Water and Ghost. The team of Pokémon GO particularly emphasizes that this is the male variant of Quabbel. For you, this means that you will receive the Pokémon in blue color.
The female form of Quabbel is pink.
When will it be available? To receive Quabbel as a breakthrough, you must submit your 7th stamp starting April 1 at 10:00 PM (better yet, 10:05 PM or later, to minimize the risk of issues). If you receive the research breakthrough earlier, you will continue to get Kaumalat.
Spotlight hours
These have been announced: You are already familiar with the format of spotlight hours from the past months at Niantic. Every Tuesday evening, these events take place and focus on one Pokémon + bonus for one hour. What you can expect in April is now clear:
- April 6: Haspiror + double candy for transferring Pokémon
- April 13: Menki + double XP for evolving Pokémon
- April 20: Sleima + double stardust for catching Pokémon
- April 27: Finneon + double XP for catching Pokémon
These events are well-received by players in the community. This way, one can play for an hour and free up time for it. It makes farming certain Pokémon + Shinys and also important resources like XP, stardust, or candy easier.
Some trainers do not transfer Pokémon for weeks so that they can send them all at once when a bonus like on April 6 is active and receive much more candy.

Which Pokémon does he use? In April, Giovanni will provide you with a Crypto-Zapdos that you can catch.
In addition, there will be a limited research in the first week of April where you can earn a Super Rocket Radar.
Spirit-Tier Raid Bosses and new Megas
These Spirit forms are coming: In Pokémon GO, the legendary bosses Boreos, Demeteros, and Voltolos have been active for several weeks. In April, more Spirit forms will return, after those of Voltolos have already been available since March.
- From March 30 at 10:00 AM until Tuesday, April 13 at 10:00 AM, you will encounter the Spirit form of Boreos in level 5 raids
- From April 13 at 10:00 AM until Tuesday, April 27 at 10:00 AM, you will encounter the Spirit form of Demeteros in level 5 raids
- Starting April 27 at 10:00 AM, you will once again encounter Boreos, Voltolos, and Demeteros in their incarnate forms in level 5 raids. With luck, you can meet and catch all three Pokémon as Shinys.
Mega Raids: Until April 4 at 10:00 AM, you will find Mega-Hundemon, Mega-Voltenso, and Mega-Rexblisar in the Mega Raids. After that, a new Mega Pokémon will appear, which Niantic has not yet disclosed the name for. However, it is supposed to remain until the end of the month.
In addition, Mega-Gengar and Mega-Voltenso will appear in Mega Raids from April 5 to April 20. Starting April 20, Mega-Bisaflor and Mega-Rexblisar will be featured in the Mega Raids.
Upcoming Events
This has also been announced: You already know that the Community Day in April 2021 with Serpifeu will take place. In addition to this fixed event and other recurring formats, Niantic will host additional events in the coming month:
- April 1 from midnight until April 8 at 11:59 PM: Limited research with Super Rocket Radar as a reward
- April 4 to April 8: Spring Event with Chaneira, Heiteira, and Wonneire with flower crowns
- April 13 to April 18: Rivals Week with some Pokémon making their first appearance
- April 20 to April 25: Sustainability Week with spawns like Sleima and Unratütox
- April 24: Friendship Day with a new event for which there are no details yet
- End of April: A “special event” will start, which is supposed to go into May
