The special research “Research for Takeoff” is back in Pokémon GO and offers you some quests to solve. We will show you how to complete the tasks and what rewards await you.
Update from July 6, 2021: Currently, a big event is celebrating the 5th anniversary in Pokémon GO. For this occasion, the “Research for Takeoff” returns to the game.
The tasks correspond to the previous versions of the quest. However, they are only available for trainers who have not completed the research in the past. You can find the guide here:
Special research “Research for Takeoff” – The Quests
There are a total of 6 stages in this special research that you need to complete. The quests are quite doable and should be finished fairly quickly.
Stage 1 of 6
- Make a new friendship
- Reward: 5000 XP
- Catch 3 Pokémon with weather boost
- Reward: 5000 XP
- Reward: 5000 XP
Reward for completing the stage: 2 lucky eggs, an encounter with a Dratini, 15,000 Stardust
How to easily close a friendship: If you can’t find new friends, you can simply delete an old friend and add them back. You will not lose your friendship status. This status would only be lost after several weeks.

Stage 2 of 6
- Earn a candy by walking with your buddy
- Reward: 30 Dratini candies
- Take a snapshot of Dratini
- Reward: 30 Dratini candies
- Evolve a Dratini
- Reward: 10,000 XP
Reward for completing the stage: A raid pass, 15,000 Stardust, 2 lucky eggs
How to take a snapshot with Dratini: You can use the Dratini that you caught in stage 1 and take a photo in the game with your camera. This counts as a completed task.
Stage 3 of 6
- Use 10 power ups on Pokémon
- Reward: 15,000 XP
- Battle another trainer in the Super League
- Reward: 15,000 XP
- Battle in a raid
- Reward: 15,000 XP
Reward for completing the stage: 2 lucky eggs, 15,000 XP, 2 star pieces
Stage 4 of 6
- Catch 5 Pokémon of different types
- Reward: Encounter with a Panflam
- Catch a legendary Pokémon in a research breakthrough or in a raid
- Reward: Encounter with a Plinfa
- Hatch 3 eggs
- Reward: Encounter with a Chelast
Reward for completing the stage: 2 lucky eggs, encounter with a shiny Eevee, 15,000 Stardust
Stage 5 of 6
- Take a snapshot of Eevee
- Reward: 30,000 XP
- Send 5 gifts to friends
- Reward: 30,000 XP
- Trade 3 Pokémon
- Reward: 30,000 XP
Reward for completing the stage: Encounter with a Lapras, 30,000 XP, 2 lucky eggs
How to take a snapshot with Eevee: Just like with Dratini, you can use the shiny Eevee from the previous stage. Just take a picture of Eevee and the task is completed.
Stage 6 of 6
- Make a new friendship
- Reward: 60 Dratini candies
- Win a level 3 raid or higher
- Reward: 60 Dratini candies
- Evolve a Dragonir
- Reward: 100,000 XP
Reward for completing the stage: 2 lucky eggs, 100,000 XP and 15,000 Stardust
What does this special research show? This special research proves that there isn’t always a new Pokémon through the research. Here you get a guaranteed shiny and the chance for a good Dragoran.
Additionally, the amount of XP and Stardust that you receive is enormous. Especially for newcomers, this provides a good foundation.
Keep this tip in mind: If it fits, you should also activate a lucky egg or star piece for the rewards. This will increase the XP and Stardust. For the last stage, for example, you could earn 400,000 XP instead of just 200,000.
