In the research breakthrough of September, you will encounter Meditite in Pokémon GO. There are special bonuses associated with it. What they are and whether the Pokémon is worth it, we have summarized for you here on MeinMMO.
What is the research breakthrough? In Pokémon GO, you have the opportunity to complete field research by spinning PokéStops. These are various tasks such as catching Pokémon or interacting with your buddy.
For each day that you complete at least one of these quests, you will receive a stamp in your “Field” view. Once you have collected 7 stamps, an additional bonus in the form of the research breakthrough will be unlocked for you. As with the field research, the rewards change monthly.
In September, you can encounter the fighting and psychic Pokémon Medicham there. But this will not be the only surprise this month, as Niantic has planned further bonuses for the research breakthrough due to the start of the Season of Light.
Research breakthrough with Medicham – Duration, Shiny & Bonuses
When can you find Medicham in the research breakthrough? Medicham will replace Galarian Zigzagoon, the previous Pokémon of the research breakthrough, on September 1, 2022, at 10 PM German time. It will then be available for you until October 1, 2022, at 10 PM German time.
What kind of Pokémon is Medicham? The fighting and psychic Pokémon Medicham hails from the 3rd generation of games and is the evolution of Meditite. You can recognize the Pokémon by its slim white body and its pink hair and its puffed-up pants.
Can you catch Shiny Medicham? No, although the Pokémon is generally available in its shiny form in the game, you can only obtain this if you evolve a shiny Meditite. Therefore, you will only be able to catch the normal variant from the research breakthrough.
What bonuses does the research breakthrough bring? As Niantic announced on the Pokémon GO blog, you can look forward to the following bonuses during the Season of Light with the research breakthrough (via pokemongolive.com):
- additional items
- more stardust
In the month of September, you will also receive a premium battle pass in addition to encountering Medicham.
Is the research breakthrough with Medicham worth it?
It is that strong: Medicham is not particularly strong, which is why it does not play a big role in raids. For this reason, you should focus on stronger specimens there. An insight into the best attackers in Pokémon GO can be found in the following video:
In contrast to the raids, the situation is different in the GO Battle League. Here, Medicham is one of the best candidates in the Great League, securing 8th place in the PvPoke ranking. You should ideally use a moveset of Counter, Ice Punch, and Psychic (via pvpoke.com).
Who should utilize the research breakthrough? The research breakthrough is especially interesting for trainers who want to secure a strong Medicham for the Great League. The chances are quite good because, based on experience, you frequently get stronger monsters from the rewards than you would normally find in the wild.
And you should not miss out on the additional bonuses in the form of more stardust and a premium battle pass. With the latter, you can complete additional raids on-site or secure yourself premium access to the GO Battle League.
However, shiny hunters will not benefit from this research breakthrough at all, which is very unfortunate because there is already a shiny version of Meditite in the game.
What does the community say about the new breakthrough? The research breakthrough with Medicham currently receives little acknowledgement in the reddit community. Many find it unfortunate that Medicham will not be available as shiny, which devalues the reward in their opinion.
In addition, Medicham is only interesting for the GO Battle League, and its pre-evolution is also frequently found in the wild. Compared to previous breakthroughs, some consider it less worthwhile. Reddit user thelaziest998 summarizes the opinion of these trainers as follows:
It may be just a small part of the game, but it’s kind of annoying when the rewards used to be legendary Pokémon. For example, when the research came out, there were legendary birds and beasts. That was a nice way for people to get a legendary Pokémon every week for things they had missed. Medicham is kind of lame because it isn’t rare at all. It would be great if they at least stuck to rare Pokémon.
