The research breakthrough for October 2021 in Pokémon GO is now known. It is the ghost-type Pokémon Makabaja. However, the community is not thrilled with this “reward”. We will show you why.
This is new: The developers of Pokémon GO explain that Makabaja is your reward in the October research breakthrough. Trainers achieve a research breakthrough when they earn a research stamp by completing field research for seven days.
What bothers the trainers is the choice of Pokémon. This is currently causing a big discussion in the community.
Makabaja in the research breakthrough
What kind of Pokémon is this? Makabaja is not new in Pokémon GO, it was already found everywhere during the Halloween event in 2019. It belongs to the 5th generation and is a ghost type. The mask Pokémon also has a Galar form. This belongs to the ground and ghost types.

“A reward that is not a reward”
This is being discussed: The news about the research breakthrough with Makabaja quickly spread in the Pokémon GO community. However, this reward for the breakthrough is viewed rather negatively.
On reddit chatchan writes: “And is Makabaja available as a research breakthrough because it won’t spawn this Halloween? Or will it spawn anyway and they just wanted to give us another breakthrough reward that is not a reward?” The discussion revolves around the fact that Niantic could at least give us “Galar-Makabaja” as a reward.
Regarding this topic, IranianGenius writes on reddit: “Seriously, then it would at least have the ‘rarity’ factor that Ninjatom had. I don’t really know how Makabaja performs in PvP, but it’s basically the most worthless breakthrough I’ve ever seen. I’ve kept track of myself, and I don’t think any of the breakthroughs this year have really been good (except for Kaumalat). Chaneira and Relaxo are ‘decent’ for anyone getting into the arena meta where that’s still relevant, but you need to get so many more candies to push to level 15.
Kaumalat is technically great, even considering it had a Community Day… but the Community Day makes it seem less interesting. I don’t think any of the other Pokémon were even remotely useful, aside from getting extra candies for a PvP-relevant Pokémon?
As a rural player, even without shiny Makabaja, I am more interested in the chance of getting 20 Poké Balls than the breakthrough reward.
Other players remember the early days of research breakthroughs when Niantic rewarded players with legendary Pokémon like Entei.
Again and again, it comes up in the comments about Makabaja that Niantic could at least have brought the Galar form. Instead, we only get the ‘normal’ form of the Pokémon.
