What is a research breakthrough? Completing a field research task over seven days gives you the chance to encounter a rare Pokémon in the research breakthrough. In November, this Pokémon was Ninjatom.
In December, trainers have the opportunity to encounter Arktos, Lavados, Zapdos, Entei, Raikou, and Suicune.
Multiple Pokémon in the research breakthrough in December
For the first time, players have the chance to obtain multiple Pokémon from research breakthroughs. Until now, only one Pokémon could be obtained in a month.
In reference to the Community Day: These research breakthroughs are aligned with the Community Day in December. There, too, all previous Pokémon from the past Community Days return.
Can you choose which Pokémon you want? So far, it is not known which Pokémon you will receive in which research breakthrough. It is assumed that chance determines which Pokémon appears as a reward.
Which Pokémon are the best in the breakthrough? Now that there are six different Pokémon in the research breakthrough, the question of which Pokémon are the best arises.
- Raikou: Based purely on stats and moves, Raikou is the best Pokémon. It is the second-best Electric attacker in the game and most useful.
- Lavados: With Lavados, you get the chance at the best Fire attacker in the game. So, if you don’t have a good Lavados yet, you can hope for the research breakthrough.
- Zapdos: Zapdos follows Raikou in the list of best Electric attackers.

New Shiny and new Pandir: If Niantic stays true to its line, there will also be a new Pandir form in December. Additionally, a new Shiny family could be added. In November, the Shiny family of Raupy was added to the game.
