This weekend, the legendary Pokémon Latias and Latios return to Pokémon GO. We provide you with an overview of the best counters, their usability, and the Shinies.
When are Latias and Latios coming? The duo appears tonight, on January 24th, at 10 PM in the arenas. Here in Germany, that’s already too late for raids, which is why we start on Saturday. Until Monday evening, January 27th at 10 PM, the Pokémon will remain available.
To prepare you in the best possible way for the raid weekend, we will show you the best counters and provide further information about the event.
This is how the raid weekend with Latias and Latios works
This is how a raid weekend works: Such events have taken place in the past, last with Lugia and Ho-Oh.
During this time, legendary raids will appear more frequently, but not everywhere, unlike during raid hour. In addition to Latias and Latios, Heatran will also continue to be available in level 5 raids.
Use these tips: If you are still looking for shiny Latias or Latios, you should coordinate with other players. We give you some tips on how to make the most of the event:
- Prepare effective battle teams before the raids, so you don’t have to do it quickly in the lobby.
- Coordinate with other players who might want to raid the same Pokémon as you. Then form a team.

The best counters against Latias and Latios
Use these types: Both Pokémon are of Psychic and Dragon type. The effective types are Ice, Dragon, Fairy, Dark, Ghost, and Bug. So you can set up broad counter teams.
Use these counters: The counters against the two Pokémon look quite similar. Therefore, we show you the 10 best counters that are useful against both monsters:
- Rayquaza with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Dialga with Fire Fang and Draco Meteor
- Palkia with Dragon Tail and Draco Meteor
- Salamence with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Garchomp with Dragon Tail and Dragon Claw
- Feraligatr with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Dragonite with Dragon Tail and Outrage
- Darkrai with Snarl and Dark Pulse
- Giratina (Altered Form) with Shadow Claw and Shadow Ball
- Snorunt with Snarl and Avalanche
Dragon Pokémon are the best against Latias and Latios. The other types are not bad either and only slightly weaker.
How many players are needed? You can only defeat Latias with three players. Even with weather boost, Latias cannot be beaten in duo. To make it particularly quick, we recommend a group size of 4 to 6 players.
Latios, on the other hand, can be defeated in duo if windy weather exists. Without the weather bonus, the duo is also not possible. Again, a group size of 4 to 6 players is the best.
Shiny Latias and Latios – All info
Are the two Shinies available? Since the last return of the duo, they can also be caught as Shiny. So you can catch 3 different Shinies in the legendary raids, as Heatran is also available.
What is the chance of getting a Shiny? The chance of a legendary Shiny from a raid is 1 in 19. So you have pretty good chances for a Shiny if you raid diligently.
Are the raids of Latias and Latios worth it?
How good is Latias: Raids of Latias will not be very interesting except for Shinies. The stats of the Pokémon are not very good, and Latias is nothing more than a weaker alternative.
How good is Latios: This is one of the best Dragon attackers in the game. While it is not as good as Rayquaza or Dialga, it has a faster attack with Dragon Claw.
The fast attack is mainly interesting for trainer battles and against Team GO Rocket. Having a good Latios in your team is therefore not a bad idea.
