COVID-19 numbers are rising again worldwide, and Pokémon GO is reacting to this. You can now put a face mask on your avatar, which is completely free.
This is new: If you want to customize your character in Pokémon GO, there is now a new field labeled “Mask”. There you can select a white face mask that your character can wear.
With this, you can also show in the game how important the mask is and remind your fellow players that they should also wear a mask.
How to get the avatar mask
What you need to do: The mask is available for pickup on your account. Just follow these steps:
- Click on your avatar in the bottom left corner
- Then go to the “Customize” field
- At the bottom of the bar, the “Mask” field will appear
- Select the white mask, and your avatar will wear the face protection
This is a bit strange: Just in early October, Niantic lifted the COVID-19 measures in Pokémon GO that were supposed to protect players from infection.
It seemed a little like Niantic was saying, “COVID-19 is over, you can go outside again!” At least, that’s how some trainers interpreted it.
However, now there is the face mask, and Niantic is once again addressing the issue of COVID-19. Although trainers have no reason to stay at home, they can still remind their friends, who are just opening gifts or raiding, that they should wear a protective mask.
The new events in Pokémon GO definitely do not indicate that one can relax and play from home. For example, the Halloween event is starting soon, where numerous ghost Pokémon will be waiting for the trainers:
