For a short time, the promo codes in Pokémon GO were activated. What are these codes about and could they soon be permanently in the game?
Just a few hours ago, a text field for promo codes was active in the Pokémon GO shop. However, this was (not yet) a permanent change, as the text field disappeared shortly after. It is quite possible that the codes will be integrated into the game in the next update, allowing players to enter voucher codes to receive items from the shop at a discount or for free.

What are promo codes anyway?
Promotion codes exist in many online games to activate special items, heroes, or bonuses. They are often distributed at trade shows or sponsored events to promote a title and reward players who attend the event. For example, there were promo codes for League of Legends at Gamescom, which unlocked certain champion skins for you.
Promo Codes in Pokémon GO
There have been indications of these special redeemable codes in the past. In the data mining for patch 0.59.1, experts found lines of code in March that suggest this promo system. Trainers could receive various items in Pokémon GO as a result. More specifically, the code showed connections to avatar items, Pokémon candies, stardust, and coins. With the promo codes, Pokémon and eggs are considered unlikely.
Following the data mining in March, there are now new hints about these codes, suggesting that this feature may soon be permanently activated in the game. Reddit user Mont713 uploaded this screenshot from the shop a few hours ago:
This field for promo codes was active in the game for only a few hours before it disappeared again. This clearly shows that this feature is either finished or at least close to completion and could soon be permanently activated in the game.
So far, Niantic has not released any official announcements about it. However, it is quite possible that this feature could be activated in the next update and made available to you.
