Finally confirmed Pokémon GO officially has the new max level at level 50. But how do you actually level up further? We will show you here.
This has now been confirmed: In a large announcement, Niantic stated that Pokémon GO is now getting the biggest update of all time. This also includes the increase of the max level, which was previously capped at level 40.
The new max level is level 50. You now have ten additional levels you can rise with your Trainer. Just before this announcement, Niantic made Trainers aware of a possible change with a mysterious tweet.
However, you should not just farm XP, but rather utilize a new leveling experience.
The changes at a glance:
- The new level cap is at level 50 – Starting December 1 (time still unclear)
- Your skills as a Trainer are crucial for leveling
- Already gained XP after level 40 will be included
- Your Pokémon will also become stronger
- Starting November 30, you will generally receive more XP for catching or evolving Pokémon, for hatching eggs, or for Pokédex entries – this has already been tested with tenfold XP for excellent throws
- Challenge to reach level 40 before the end of the year
How does leveling change after 40?
Tasks for each level-up: Niantic explained that you need more than just XP to rise in level after 40.
For each level-up, you must successfully complete a research task. And these tasks are quite challenging. We at MeinMMO attended a video conference with Niantic and already saw some of the tasks for this.
Niantic also shared graphics to give an idea of the challenges for a level-up.
To reach level 46, you must:
- Complete 100 field research tasks
- Take a snapshot of a Pokémon for 7 consecutive days
- Hit 50 excellent throws
- Hatch 30 eggs
- Additionally, you need to gather XP

It is likely that quests will still be replaced or altered before the new levels are unlocked for you.
Here’s what Niantic says about the requirements for each level:
Level 41: You must catch many Pokémon in one day.
Prove your persistence in catching Pokémon! You need to catch a large number of Pokémon in a single day and complete additional tasks to reach level 41.
Level 42: You must evolve Eevee into all possible forms.
We will test your knowledge about Pokémon evolutions! You must, among other things, evolve Eevee into all possible forms and use specific evolution items on certain Pokémon to reach level 42.
Level 43: Here you should earn Platinum Medals.
Show us that you are a master in Gym battles and Raid battles. You will also need to have earned a certain number of Platinum Medals to reach level 43. In the end, there will be a surprise for your avatar!
Level 44: Fight against other trainers in PvP.
Fighting against other trainers has been a fundamental part of Pokémon RPGs from the beginning, but in Pokémon GO, this feature is still relatively new. Have you already worked on your skills in Trainer battles? If not, you should start if you want to reach level 44!
Level 45: Take on Team Rocket.
You have battled in Gym battles, Raid battles, and GO Battle League battles, but you will only reach level 45 if you take on Team GO Rocket! There will also be a surprise for your avatar for that!
Level 46: To reach level 46, you should complete field research tasks, hatch eggs, and take snapshots.
Get moving, you persistent trainers! If you want to reach level 46, you must complete field research projects, hatch eggs, and document your daily adventures with GO Snapshot!
Level 47: For this, you should win Raids with very specific teams.
You might think you are the best at Raid battles, but the tasks for level 47 will separate the wheat from the chaff. One of the challenges is to win Raid battles with very specific team compositions – and that’s just the beginning!
Level 48: Here, the friendship with your buddy is the focus.
For level 48, you must focus on one of the most important aspects of Pokémon GO: the friendship with your buddy Pokémon. You will only achieve the level-up if you dedicate yourself to this friendship. Among other things, you must walk a certain distance with your buddy Pokémon and collect souvenirs. In the end, there will be another surprise for your avatar!
Level 49: Achieving level 49 only works with many friendships. You should send gifts, trade lucky Pokémon, and perform friendship actions.
If there’s one thing as important as the friendship with your buddy Pokémon, it’s the friendship with other trainers. The people we meet on our Pokémon journey enrich our lives in many ways. Therefore, you must nurture these friendships to become a true Pokémon master! You will only reach level 49 if you send gifts, receive lucky Pokémon in trades, and perform other friendship actions.
Level 50: You must, for example, land excellent throws, catch Legendary Pokémon, and defeat Team GO Rocket leaders with Pokémon under 1500 CP.
You could call this challenge the ultimate test of whether you belong among the best in Pokémon GO. Of course, you will also receive a surprise for your avatar for that! In Pokémon GO, XL Candy will also be introduced. You will need these to train Pokémon to a higher CP value than possible before. You will obtain them by catching Pokémon or converting regular candy into XL Candy. There will be more ways to obtain XL Candy – stay tuned!

The Platinum Medals are a level higher than the current Gold Medals. It is still to be determined what the requirements are.
Who gets to test this? Selected trainers in Australia can already test the new system and provide feedback to the developers. This starts from November 19. Based on the feedback from the testers, the system will be further optimized.
How much XP do you need after level 40?
This is known so far: From the screenshots Niantic shared with the press, the XP requirement for level 46 can be seen.
- For level 46, you need to collect 15,550,000 XP
From level 39 to level 40, you had to collect 5,000,000 XP. That’s already a significant increase.
What about my old XP? If you have already reached level 40 and collected experience points beyond that, these will be credited to you for the levels after 40. However, you still need to complete the challenges to receive a level-up.
Reach level 40 before 2021 and secure a cool reward
This is the task: Niantic challenges you trainers to reach level 40 by a certain time. If you don’t make it, that’s okay. If you do it, you will be rewarded.
- Reach level 40 before Thursday, December 31, 2020 at 11:59 PM local time
- Then you will receive a title, the previous level 40 medal, and a limited research task
- As a reward in the exclusive research, a Gyarados hat awaits you

There’s a lot of XP now: To reach this goal quickly, Pokémon GO is launching a friendship event that rewards you with more XP. Additionally, starting November 18, you will also receive double XP for catching Pokémon. The double catch XP will be active until December 31.
In December, a special limited research task will also be released to help you level up. Details are not yet available, but it seems there are plenty of XP to be earned here.
What will happen to my Pokémon?
They will get stronger: With the new trainer level, you can also boost your Pokémon again. With further level-ups, you can push their CP even higher.
It is unclear whether level-ups will still be possible with stardust and candy or if additional requirements will be implemented.
It will be interesting to see how this will affect the game. It is questionable whether Niantic will also strengthen the Raid bosses or if only your Pokémon will become stronger. This would significantly impact the number of attackers required for Raid battles.
