Pokémon GO is participating in the Pokémon World Championships for the first time this year and is launching a World Championship in-game event. We at MeinMMO have looked at what spawns and bonuses await you.
What kind of event is it? Together with the Pokémon Company and other Pokémon games, the Pokémon World Championships is taking place in London from August 18 to 21. And Pokémon GO will also be part of it for the first time.
This definitely calls for a celebration, which is why Niantic is launching a fitting in-game event for all trainers alongside the content surrounding the live event. Of course, you can look forward to numerous spawns, as well as one or two bonuses. For example, you can expect:
- Pikachu in World Championship costume
- Exclusive event attacks for selected Pokémon
We have summarized what content is planned and what you need to know about the live event below.
When is the event running? While the Pokémon World Championships take place in London from August 18 to 21, the related event runs from August 18, 2022, at 10:00 AM local time to August 23, 2022, at 8:00 PM local time.
All bonuses for the World Championship event
What bonuses can you expect? Of course, you can look forward to some bonuses at the WM event again. These are thematically appropriate and mainly revolve around trainer battles. Here’s what you can expect:
- Challengers at PokéStops competing with the teams of the regional championship winners
- 10 battle sets (a total of 50 battles) in the GO Battle League per day
- 3x Stardust as a reward for winning battles in the GO Battle League
- Timed research
- Reward: Elite Fast TM, Elite Charged TM, and an encounter with Pikachu in World Championship costume*
- Exclusive attacks for selected Pokémon
- special avatar items in the in-game shop:
- Dragon Sports Top
- Dragon Sports Shorts
- Dark Sports Top
- Dark Sports Shorts
Exclusive attacks for the World Championship event
What is it about? During the event, selected Pokémon can learn a special event attack. You will receive this when you trigger the evolution from the respective pre-evolution. This way you can secure the following attacks:
| Attack | Evolution |
| Rock Throw | Rhydon to Rhyperior |
| Shadow Punch | Haunter to Gengar |
| Water Tail | Magikarp to Gyarados |
| Meteor Mash | Metang to Metagross |
| Incinerate | Dartix to Talonflame |
Are the attacks worth it? The evolutions mentioned above are really strong and are among the best attackers in Pokémon GO, but can also hold their own in the GO Battle League. The respective event attacks provide appropriate support and should therefore be a fixed part of their movesets.
For example, Talonflame can reach 14th place in the Ultra League with a moveset of Incinerate, Brave Bird, and Flame Charge in the PvPoke rankings. Gyarados, on the other hand, can assert itself in both the Ultra and Master Leagues with its moveset of Fire Spin, Water Tail, and Crunch.
And you can also optimally use the event attacks in raids. Rhyperior is one of the best Rock attackers in the game and relies on the moveset of Smack Down and Rock Throw, dealing significant damage to the opponent.
Metagross can also excel as the strongest Steel attacker with a moveset of Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash in raids as well as in PvP battles. It’s worth taking the opportunity to secure the event attacks. After that, they can only be learned via Elite Fast TM or Elite Charged TM for now.

The Pokémon World Championship 2022 in London
What is the Pokémon World Championship? The Pokémon Company regularly hosts Pokémon World Championships, where the best trainers of the different games showcase their skills and compete against each other for the title of World Champion.
In 2022, Pokémon GO will also be part of this spectacle for the first time. In the past months, you had the chance to qualify for the event. Now the best trainers in the world are ready and will compete against each other in the GO Battle League during the live event in London.
In addition to the World Champion title, they will also compete for other prizes. For example, the winner will receive an exclusive pose in the game as well as a World Champion outfit.
Can you watch the championship? Yes, you can follow the battles for the World Champion title in a live stream on the Pokémon GO Twitch channel. These will take place from August 18, 2022, to August 21, 2022, starting at 8:00 AM UTC, which is 10:00 AM German time.
Are there bonuses for all players? Yes, the live event also offers special bonuses for you. Those participating in the World Championship will receive a special red Champion shirt for their avatar.
But trainers who watch the competition from home should also pay close attention, as Niantic will release special promo codes during the live stream, with which you can secure a blue Champion shirt for your avatar.
What do you think of the contents of the World Championship event? Did you wish for different monsters and bonuses? And will you be watching the battles in the live stream on Twitch? Feel free to share your opinion here in the comments on MeinMMO.
In the coming days, there is still a lot to come in Pokémon GO. We will show you all events in August and which ones are particularly worth it.
