Players have long been waiting for an increase in the max level in Pokémon GO. As part of the GO Fest, the developers gave a small insight into upcoming features – including leveling from level 41.
What is already known about the max level? It is certain by now that the current maximum level of 40 will not remain forever. Rumors of an increase have been around for a long time, and there has been more information on this in recent weeks.
For example, Product Manager Matt Slemon from Niantic said in June, that XP will play a role beyond level 40. He responded to a relevant question with “I say ‘yes’, but that’s all I can say about it right now”. During the GO Fest 2020, he elaborated on this.
The new max level will be different
This is what Matt Slemon says: The Product Manager explained that they want to prevent players from suddenly reaching their new level after level 40 and that being the end. This has been the case so far, as the current maximum level was the final point for progression: “We want leveling beyond level 40 to feel different than it did up to level 40,” said Slemon.
Because although XP will probably play a role according to previous statements, it will no longer be the only factor: “Reaching level 41 and beyond will still require effort. Levels are supposed to show how much effort you have invested in the game,” said Slemon: “But it won’t be as easy as grinding XP in the way you are used to. The experience will be a bit different, and we’re looking forward to saying more about this later this year.”
He did not specify exactly how the level can be increased. It looks like we will have to wait.
In addition to the max level, Slemon also talked about Mega Evolutions. He confirmed that Pokémon that players already own can Mega Evolve. Here you can find out what Mega Evolutions are and which Pokémon can master them.
