In September, a new EX Raid Boss is expected to appear in Pokémon GO. Which Pokémon will you be able to battle in the special raids? We have taken a closer look at four candidates.
This was the EX Raid Boss so far: After Mewtwo left the EX Raids as a boss, the mysterious Pokémon Deoxys took its place. The various forms of the monster have been available in EX Raids over the past months.
Between September 9 and 16, all forms will be available for the first time in regular raids as part of the best Pokémon GO month ever. It is likely that we will face a new boss in the EX Raids then. But who will it be?
These 4 Pokémon could be successors to Deoxys
Who will follow Deoxys? The two EX Raid bosses Mewtwo and Deoxys were not catchable in the game before they entered the EX Raids. Thus, they held a special status. Therefore, it can be assumed that the upcoming EX Raid boss will also not have been available before – and will likely be quite strong.
Some Pokémon from Generation 4 are still missing that could qualify as EX Raid bosses. In addition, the release of Generation 5 with its legendary and mysterious Pokémon is imminent. The following candidates would fit as a new boss.
Darkrai
What makes Darkrai special: Darkrai is a mysterious Dark-type Pokémon and an absolute fan favorite among Pokémon players. It is characterized by an extremely high attack value and has been regarded for a long time as one of the favorites to succeed Deoxys.
Darkrai belongs to the Pokémon of Generation 4 that have not been released yet and could therefore still make its way into the EX Raids. Among the candidates for the Deoxys succession, it would be the most useful Pokémon; with the right moves, it could be the strongest Dark attacker in the game.
Darkrai’s potential stats in Pokémon Go:

- HP: 172
- Attack: 285
- Defense: 198
Possible moves of Darkrai: According to “Pokefans”, Darkrai could receive the fast moves Feint and Standpauke. The charge moves would be quite diverse: With Focus Blast (Fighting type), Shadow Ball (Ghost type), and Dark Pulse (Dark type), there are several options for Darkrai.
Shaymin
What makes Shaymin special: Shaymin is also a mysterious Pokémon from Generation 4. It has the Grass type – at least in its Land Form. Like Deoxys, it has an additional form: the Sky Form, which also adds the Flying type. Similar to Deoxys, it could appear in two different variants over different periods. It offers solid stats but would be overlooked in the meta.
Shaymin’s potential stats in Pokémon Go:
- Max CP: 3265 (Land Form) / 3592 (Sky)
- HP: 225 (Land) / 225 (Sky)
- Attack: 210 (Land) / 261 (Sky)
- Defense: 210 (Land) / 166 (Sky)
Possible moves of Shaymin in Pokémon Go: Currently, Shaymin is associated with the fast moves Hidden Power and Zen Headbutt. As charge moves, Grass-type attacks like Energy Ball, Seed Bomb, and Solar Beam are potential options.
Arceus
What makes Arceus special: Arceus holds a special position in Pokémon mythology. It is considered the “God” or “Creator” of the Pokémon world and is the leader of the unpopular Lake Trio consisting of Mesprit, Uxie, and Azelf as well as the Dimension Trio, consisting of Giratina, Dialga, and Palkia. Accordingly, you can expect a very strong Pokémon – Arceus also comes from Generation 4 and is still missing.
What is particularly exciting about Arceus is that its type varied in the original games. With the right “plate”, it could assume any type. It is possible that it appears as an EX Raid Boss in different variations.
Arceus’s potential stats in Pokémon Go:

- HP: 237
- Attack: 238
- Defense: 238
Possible moves of Arceus in Pokémon Go: Current potential fast moves for Arceus include Iron Tail and Dark Claw; possible charge moves would be Future Sight, Hyper Beam, and Outrage. If special type distribution for Arceus were to be considered, it would also be possible that the different variants could be equipped with the top moves of their respective types.
Genesect
What makes Genesect special: Genesect as a new EX Raid Boss would be a huge surprise and is more of an outsider tip. This is because it belongs to the mysterious Pokémon of Generation 5. Chronologically, the Pokémon of Generation 4 would therefore have a higher probability of being the new boss.
However, it would fit well as a raid boss compared to Mewtwo and Deoxys. The former was, according to Pokémon lore, the result of an experiment, and Deoxys represented an extraterrestrial Pokémon. Genesect also originated in its current form from experiments in the main games and is considered an “extraordinary” Pokémon. Additionally, it does not belong to any trio or duo. It is possible that it could be a surprise addition to the start of Generation 5 in Pokémon Go in the EX Raids. The Steel and Bug Pokémon was only obtainable via events and trades in the main games.
Genesect’s potential stats in Pokémon Go:
- Max CP: 3288
- HP: 174
- Attack: 252
- Defense: 199
Possible moves of Genesect in Pokémon Go: Nothing is yet known about Genesect’s potential moves. In the main games, it primarily utilized Steel, Bug, and Electric-type moves. Among others, Genesect could score with Hyper Beam, Bug Buzz, Flash Cannon, and X-Scissor in the main games.
