What features are involved? In Pokémon GO, trainers have had the ability to temporarily evolve certain Pokémon into Mega Evolutions for some time now. This is done using specific Mega Energy, which can primarily be collected through Mega Raids.
However, just a few days ago, the PokeMiners found indications in the game code that Pokémon GO is revamping the Mega Evolutions. This feature is supposed to give players more options regarding Mega Pokémon. Further details have now been discovered, which we will show you below.
The PokeMiners are a group of dataminers who regularly search the code of Pokémon GO for new information. They can discover new data, like features or Pokémon, before a release and make this data publicly available to other trainers.
However, since the data is unofficial, Niantic can change it at any time or even decide against a release in the game.
These are the new findings regarding Mega Evolutions
As Reddit user martycochrane mentions in his current post, the PokeMiners have come across new details regarding Mega Evolutions in the game code of Pokémon GO during their last search (via reddit.com).
The exact information concerning their findings has been shared via their homepage (via pokeminers.com). It can be inferred from this data that the first texts regarding the planned changes in the game have now been established. This allows for a better understanding of the individual processes. We have summarized all the details found for you below.
What everyone has been waiting for: Mega Evolutions in the Raid Lobby
A feature that many players have been waiting a long time for is performing a Mega Evolution in the Raid Lobby. Most players have likely experienced being invited to a raid or wanting to spontaneously participate and finding themselves in the lobby thinking “Damn, I wanted to perform a Mega Evolution.”
Currently, this is only possible outside of the Raid Lobby, which means trainers would have to leave the raid. The latest discovery from the PokeMiners shows a significant improvement in this regard for the future. You will then be able to perform a Mega Evolution directly in the Raid Lobby without needing to leave the raid.
In the Raid Lobby, there will reportedly be a notification when you can perform a Mega Evolution. Through a special menu, where you can likely see the images of the individual Megas, you will have the opportunity to evolve them.
Mega Levels and Rewards
The Mega Levels: In their first finding, the PokeMiners came across a level system related to Mega Evolutions. They can now further specify this feature. Similar to your buddy, there will also be different levels for Mega Pokémon that you can reach.
Your Pokémon will level up the more often you evolve it into a Mega Pokémon. It can reach the following three stages: Base, High, and Maximum. The respective status and the evolutions required for the next level will be displayed to you, according to the PokeMiners. Additionally, there will be a daily cap on how often you can level up your Mega Evolutions.
Rewards for Mega Evolutions: Furthermore, the PokeMiners discovered various rewards associated with Mega Evolutions during their first search. You can receive additional candies, XL candies, and an XP bonus.
These are reportedly dependent on your throwing skill. If you hit an excellent throw, you increase your chances of getting an XL candy. Moreover, there should be discounts regarding Mega Energy.
Free Mega Evolutions
In their previous search, the PokeMiners discovered a hint in the source code indicating that it should be possible to perform a free Mega Evolution in the future. The assumption was that this relates to the rewards trainers receive for reaching the various levels.
In their current finding, they have found more detailed information about this. Accordingly, the functionality of free Mega Evolutions has something to do with cooldown. There is a cooldown period after a Mega Evolution, which currently extends for several days.
When you level up your Pokémon, this cooldown decreases. During this cooldown, you can still Mega Evolve your Pokémon. Depending on how much time is left, the required Mega Energy will be reduced accordingly, similar to Home transfers. However, exact figures for the duration of the cooldown are not yet available based on the current findings.
Collecting Mega Energy
Some trainers had hoped that the changes regarding Mega Evolutions would also alter the collection of Mega Energy. However, according to the current information in the game code, everything remains the same. This means participation in Mega Raids continues to be necessary.
Mega Evolutions in Trainer Battles
Another wish that trainers expressed after the release of the last finding is the allowance of Mega Evolutions in the GO Battle League. Indeed, the PokeMiners have now found hints that Mega Pokémon will soon be allowed in Trainer Battles.
Whether this will also affect the GO Battle League is not evident from the finding, but the announced Mega Surprise at the end of the season may indicate this.

Hints toward a release of Mega Kangaskhan, Mega Latias, and Mega Latios come from another earlier finding, which indicates hints on the first legendary Mega Pokémon.
