Pokémon GO has expanded the tests of the new coin system to Germany and other countries. We show you what has changed now and how you can earn coins.
What is new? On the evening of August 4th, the developers of Pokémon GO shared the news that the new coin system is now being expanded to more countries, including Germany. Specifically, this means that you will now find more methods in the game to earn the coveted PokéCoins.
With these coins, you can shop in the store and get remote raid passes, lucky eggs, or other powerful items.
This is how the new coin system works
Here you can find it: When you start Pokémon GO, you will find the new system in the “Today” overview.
- Select the research symbol above the “Nearby” display in the game
- Now select the left tab called “Today”
- Scroll under the overview of “Special Bonuses”
- Now you can see your daily tasks
How does it work? If you complete all of the listed tasks, you will receive 20 PokéCoins. Keep in mind that this system is still in testing. Tasks and the number of coins as a reward may change during the testing phase.
The quests will likely vary and challenge you in various areas. These include throws, catches, raids, or using berries while catching. As examples of quests, Niantic mentioned these:
- Land a fabulous throw.
- Evolve a Pokémon.
- Land a great throw.
- Use a berry when catching a Pokémon.
- Take a snapshot of your buddy.
- Catch a Pokémon.
- Use a power-up on a Pokémon.
- Land a good throw.
- Send a Pokémon.
- Win a raid.
Will you still get 50 coins from gyms?
This is how the system changes for you: Currently, you no longer receive 50 coins for defending gyms. The number has been reduced to 30 coins.
The limit per day is 50 PokéCoins that you can earn in total. This consists of a maximum of 30 coins from gyms and the remaining 20 from the new coin system of daily research.
Remember this:
- You can earn a maximum of 50 coins per day
- You receive 6 coins per hour for defending gyms
- You earn a maximum of 30 coins per day for defending gyms
- You reach the limit after 5 hours
- You receive 20 coins per day for successfully completing quests under “Today”
This is how the system has worked so far
This has happened so far: In February 2020, there were already the first hints through leaks about a new coin system.
In the following month, further leaks confirmed what was coming our way. Earning coins through quests, hooray. Trainers were looking forward to the overhaul. The first tests were run exclusively for players in Australia. What followed until the release in August in Germany were many adjustments:
Initially, the tests did not go as smoothly as hoped. Niantic drastically reduced the coins per hour that you receive for defending the gym. In the first tests in Australia, trainers earned only 2 PokéCoins per hour in gyms and expressed significant criticism. Even though the daily coin limit was raised to 55 at that time.
Criticism was also directed at the “Win a Raid” task. This was mainly due to COVID-19, as trainers could not leave their homes in many places. They felt compelled to use a remote raid pass for the task, which costs 100 coins. So it wasn’t worth it at all. Testers called the new coin system “trash system” after only 3 days.
In June, the major overhaul of the system came. Since then, there are again 6 coins per hour and the daily limit returned to 50 coins.
Why is this happening now?
This is what Niantic says: In their blog, the developers of Niantic write that the tests of the coin system are promising. They noted that “more trainers than ever are receiving free PokéCoins”.
After much positive feedback from Australia, they are now expanding the reward test for PokéCoins to Germany, New Zealand, and Taiwan.
