Mewtwo is the next legendary raid boss that you can face in Pokémon GO. After the legendary birds, the psychic monster is now in the game and challenges you to a tough battle. In this guide, we show you which monsters can counter Mewtwo, to then have the chance to catch it.
After Lugia, Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos found their way into the game, Mewtwo comes next. For a certain time, which Niantic has not yet specified, you can be invited to fight against Mewtwo in exclusive raids. To have a good chance of victory, we show you the important stats and counters for Mewtwo.

Mewtwo Max CP and Type Weaknesses
The legendary boss Mewtwo is strong and needs several trainers to be defeated. It is impossible to win this raid battle alone. How many trainers are needed will be revealed in the coming weeks. However, it is recommended to form a large group of trainers with many counter Pokémon.
Mewtwo is a Psychic type and has many counter options. The boss has 49,430 CP and has a maximum of 2,275 CP after being caught.
Mewtwo Raid Counter – How to defeat the Psychic Monster
To have a complete Pokémon collection, you need Mewtwo, which you can encounter as a raid boss in Pokémon GO. However, this occurs in exclusive raids with an invitation system. If you receive an invitation, you first need to defeat the monster before you can catch it.
Luckily, Mewtwo got a few nerfs before its release, which weaken its strength, defense, and stamina. This makes the battle a bit easier. However, you should pay special attention to dodging its attacks. Mewtwo has strong attacks and can easily defeat your Pokémon.
The best attacker against Mewtwo is Tyranitar, as psychic attacks do not affect Tyranitar much and it also has powerful attacks. If your Tyranitar knows Bite and Stone Edge from the battle against the legendary birds, that’s not a problem. The only better moveset against Mewtwo would be Bite and Crunch. Even the worst moveset with Iron Tail and Fire Blast would still be “okay” (however, anyone who has spare TMs should get rid of those two attacks).
If the raid boss Mewtwo knows the attack Focus Blast, you must definitely dodge. This fighting attack deals a lot of damage and can quickly take down Tyranitar. Your priority should be dodging here.It may sound ironic, but Mewtwo is another good counter against … Mewtwo. Shadow Ball is one of the strongest attacks in the game and deals significant damage to psychic Pokémon. So if you already have a Mewtwo in your collection that knows Shadow Ball, you have a good attacker against the raid boss Mewtwo.
Also strong in battle against Mewtwo are:
- Houndoom with moveset Snarl and Foul Play
- Scizor with moveset Bullet Punch and Bug Bite
- Gyarados with double dark attacks like Bite and Crunch
- Pinsir with moveset Bug Bite and Fell Stinger
- Gengar with moveset Dark Pulse and Shadow Ball – Note: Gengar is quite easy for Mewtwo to defeat. You need a specimen that is already quite high in level and has high defense and stamina values.
- Lugia with a moveset of any fast attack and the charge attack Aeroblast
- Snorlax could serve as a tank option in battle if it knows the Body Slam attack. If it does not know this, you better not use it in battle.
Catch Mewtwo – Catch Chance Still Unknown
After the battle, a bonus event starts where you have the chance to catch Mewtwo. How high the catch chance for Mewtwo is, is still uncertain. During the event in Japan, where Mewtwo first appeared, trainers had a 100% catch chance.
How high the chance ultimately is for us will probably be revealed after the first raids. If there is no 100% catch chance, you increase your chance with golden berries, great throws, and curveballs.
