For a few days now, you can challenge the Rocket bosses in Pokémon GO. The battle is not that easy, many players find it too difficult. For our author Noah, however, the difficulty is perfect.
These are the bosses: Those who have defeated the Rocket Grunts since Thursday evening will now also find mysterious components there. When combined, they yield a Rocket Radar, with which you can challenge the bosses of Team GO Rocket.
Then you will encounter Arlo, Cliff, or Sierra and must send in your best Pokémon to defeat them. As a reward, you can catch shiny Shadow Pokémon.
Rocket bosses too difficult? Not at all!
This criticism exists: Some trainers complain about the difficulty of the bosses. They are significantly harder to defeat than the usual grunts. On our Facebook page for Pokémon GO, it says:
- Jenny L.: “Earlier I think I sat at a boss 10 – 15 times and kept failing. I gave up”
- Ewgenia B.: “I don’t feel like fighting the bosses, the grunts already annoy me, but at least they’re not that hard, I’d rather go for the shinies in the wild.”
Is the criticism justified? It’s true that the bosses are quite hard to defeat. That makes sense, after all, they are the bosses of Team GO Rocket and not just regular grunts.
Here’s why I like it so much: Pokémon GO is only really difficult in a few places. Even the strongest raid bosses can be defeated by 20 players in seconds. It only becomes challenging when you’re on your own, and that’s exactly the case here.
I enjoy playing Pokémon GO to unwind and also appreciate that it isn’t always highly difficult, but sometimes I also want to be challenged.
That’s exactly what I get from the bosses here. You need to know exactly about the effectiveness, otherwise, you will lose mercilessly. Even if you have the right counters, the battles are always tight, but finally, the millions of Stardust I’ve invested pay off.
The bosses primarily fight with Pokémon that you don’t encounter every day. For instance, Spiritomb or Scizor have only one weakness that you need to know.

There is a good incentive: The Rocket grunts could be challenged for a little Stardust and usually poor Shadow Pokémon, but here you have a much better incentive: shinies.
The shiny Shadows you can obtain from the battles are my great incentive to defeat as many bosses as possible.
Besides the shinies, there is also the Unova Stone, which could only be obtained through research breakthroughs before. This is another incentive for me since I want to build an army of Cofagrigus, and I have simply been lacking the stones.
Niantic is doing this totally right: The path to the Rocket bosses is also not made easy. You have to defeat 6 grunts beforehand to collect the components. You don’t get the Rocket Radar handed to you.
Here’s what I wish for the future: I sincerely hope that Niantic continues to manage this feature with much dedication. I would love for monthly changes of Pokémon so that the bosses always face you with new monsters.
This way, new shiny Shadows could also be introduced, and I would remain engaged.
I’m looking forward to this: What is also pending is the battle against Giovanni. To face the villain’s boss, you must first complete a special research. I hope that this battle will be even more challenging and I am eagerly waiting to see what Giovanni has in store.
I already liked the Rocket Grunts because you had to approach them with knowledge:
