More and more players in Pokémon GO are reaching the maximum level of 40. However, many trainers lose their motivation to play upon reaching it. We will show you tips and tricks to keep you motivated.
Why do people still play when they have reached the maximum level of 40 in Pokémon GO? This question is being asked by more and more players as more and more players reach level 40.
How do you reach level 40? With 20 million experience points, you reach the maximum level. You can increase your experience points by catching Pokemon, spinning Pokéstops, and especially through raids. After level 40, you only collect experience points for yourself, as there is currently no level beyond 40.
Why should you continue playing after level 40?
Reaching the maximum level does not mean you are done with Pokémon GO. Other games simply end at the last level, but in Pokémon GO, you can play indefinitely.
But why? We will show you some reasons why level 40 is certainly not the end.
Community: The biggest factor is likely the community. A large part of the players is a member of a raid group or has made new friends through playing. If you have a particularly great community around you, you would only be annoyed if you stopped playing. Playing is much more fun with other players. Go hunting together with other players and make friendships. Those who have not found a community yet can look for playing partners in our Facebook group.
Improving Pokémon: Just because you are level 40 doesn’t mean you necessarily have incredibly strong Pokémon. Collect stardust and catch Pokémon with good IV values. Continuously improve your battle teams and deploy them against the respective new raid bosses. There are many Pokémon that are very useful in raids or for defense. Try to obtain these with good IV and level them all up.
Events: Niantic continually brings new events into the game. Make use of these events to earn candy and a lot of stardust. Also, the Community Days, such as next month with Tanhel, are great opportunities to rediscover your motivation.
Medals: A goal could be to gild your medals. Niantic has brought three new medals into the game with the trading system. Now it’s time to advance these. Especially the “Teenager” and “Fisher” medals present challenges for trainers. You need to catch 300 tiny Rattatas or 300 large Magikarp. Bringing these medals to gold status is indeed a significant achievement.
Pokedex: The motto of the Pokémon series was always “Gotta catch ’em all!” True to this motto, it is every trainer’s task to complete their Pokedex. Through trading, you can now obtain regional Pokémon without having been in the respective countries. It is now easier to complete the Pokedex.
Level increase: Niantic has already hinted that level 40 is not the final maximum level. So start collecting experience points diligently, so that you are well prepared in case of a level increase. When the increase comes, then it is possible that you may level up.
Set your own goals: Also set your own goals! Just because Niantic hasn’t designed the game for extreme players doesn’t mean you can’t play it extremely. Goals could be:
- Catching a certain number of Pokémon in a timeframe (150 per day)
- Successfully completing at least one raid every day
- Improving your gym battle medal
Collecting stardust is the real goal
Reaching level 40 doesn’t really advance the player. You receive no advantages or other bonuses. Reaching the level has more of a symbolic meaning. Collecting stardust and strengthening your Pokémon advances a trainer much more. Just because there’s a 40 on your screen doesn’t mean you’ve reached everything in the game. There’s still so much for you to discover in Pokémon GO.

I have been level 40 in Pokémon GO since August 2017 and mainly play in a small town in Hesse. I have already gathered 73 million experience points, which is over 50 million XP more than what is needed for level 40. In my town, I am often asked why I still play, and especially why I am still so active. After all, I should have achieved everything in Pokémon GO.
The community is the most important thing: For me, Pokémon GO is much more than just a mobile game. Through it, I have met many of my best friends, with whom I do more than just play Pokémon GO. That’s why the community is the main reason I continue to play so actively.
Set goals: I also consciously set myself goals in the game. I want to catch 100,000 Pokémon and complete over 1,000 legendary raids. Especially these two goals drive me outside the most.
Utilize events: During every stardust event, I spend hours collecting stardust. For me, there’s nothing more important in the game than this dust. I love strengthening new Pokémon and adapting my battle teams to the new opponents.
After reaching level 40, nothing has changed in my play style. Although I have a 40 on my screen, it could also be a 20 or 30. That doesn’t matter to me. I play Pokémon GO mainly because I stay in contact with friends and at the same time I am also outdoors. It doesn’t get better for me than that.
Find your play style: Everyone should find their own play style. In my opinion, however, reaching level 40 means that practically nothing has happened in the game. One should play because it’s fun and not because one is striving for a maximum level.
