The new maximum level 50 is currently being tested in Australia for trainers of Pokémon GO. Especially the XP requirement is a shock for many players.
This is currently being tested: A few days ago, Niantic announced level 50 and some trainers can already reach the new maximum level. However, the tests are not being conducted in Germany, but in Australia.
Some trainers are now reporting on their experiences, and data miners have also found information about the new maximum level. The XP amount required for level 50 stands out in particular.
You need this much XP: You need a total of 176 million XP to reach level 50. For comparison: You only need a total of 20 million XP for level 40.
The increase is enormous. The data miners of “Pokeminers” have found this amount of XP for level 50 in the code and shown it here:
Loads of XP and stress over XL candies
What does this mean for level 50? Even though there are only 10 additional levels, the way there is incredibly long. Especially for players who have just reached level 40.
You need to have reached level 40 almost 9 times to get to level 50. Additionally, there are tasks from each level that you need to complete. Comparing the requirements here, level 40 was almost child’s play compared to level 50.
This is how it works with XL candies: Not only the requirements for level 50 are hot but also the XL candies. You need them to level up Pokémon from level 40 and bring them to level 50. Normal candies can no longer be used.
You need 296 XL candies to push a Pokémon from level 40 to 50. Additionally, about 250,000 Stardust per Pokémon is required. If you want to level up all your monsters that are already at level 40, you should already start collecting Stardust diligently.

How do you get XL candies? In Australia, trainers can currently convert 100 normal candies into one XL candy. You would need 29,600 normal candies to obtain enough XL candies to push a Pokémon to level 50.
But don’t worry, there are also other ways to get XL candies:
- Eggs yield XL candies – players report over 20 XL candies for a 10-kilometer egg, plus normal candies
- Raids reportedly yield one XL candy for a Pokémon
- Sometimes sending or trading Pokémon also gives one XL candy
- Catching Pokémon in the wild sometimes gives XL candies
You don’t have to scrape together all your candy supplies to level up a Pokémon. However, you first need to earn the XL candies in the same ways you get normal candies and cannot push a Pokémon directly to level 50.
You should keep this in mind: So far, this is all just tests that Niantic is conducting. They are paying attention to player feedback and may make adjustments if necessary. So keep in mind that all this data may not be final.
What do you think of the new requirements for level 50? Are the challenges too great or are you looking forward to it?
