Since 2019, trainers in Pokémon GO have had the chance to prove their skills in the GO Battle League. Now they have the opportunity to qualify for the Pokémon World Championship. We have looked at what this event is about and how you can participate.
What kind of battles are involved? Anyone wishing to compete against other trainers in Pokémon GO can do so in the GO Battle League since 2019. In each season, there are different leagues in which players can duel. These include the Great, Ultra, and Master Leagues, as well as special event-related leagues, such as the Mini Jungle Cup.
For winning a battle, you receive a reward and, over time, increase in rank. As Niantic announced on their Twitter account, there will be a chance to participate in the Pokémon World Championships next year for the first time.
What are the Pokémon World Championships?
The Pokémon Company is organizing its own World Championship next year in cooperation with Niantic, as well as other Pokémon games like Pokkén Tournament DX. Pokémon GO will participate in this event for the first time.
The World Championship is set to take place in August 2022 in a four-day live event in London. The best trainers from Pokémon GO will be invited to showcase their skills against other trainers on-site. There will be a division into the age categories “Senior” and “Master”.
Players born between 2006 and 2009 will participate in the Senior category, according to the Pokémon Company (via pokemon.com). All trainers born in 2005 or earlier will be assigned to the Master age category. Matches will be played in the Master League using special smartphones provided by the Pokémon Company on site.
How to Register for Qualification
As Niantic has stated, the current GO Battle League is crucial for qualifying for this event (via pokemongolive.com). To register for the World Championship, you should have achieved the rank of “Legend” in this league by November 29, 2021.
Trainers with this rank will receive an advance registration period for the qualification events, which is expected to take place in early 2022. Once this period has expired, players with other ranks can apply for the remaining spots.
Additional Factors for Registration
In addition to the rank in the Battle League, three other factors must be considered for registration. One requirement for participation is a minimum age that has yet to be defined. This will be outlined in the rules, which at the current time (as of October 6, 2021) have not yet been published.
You must also accept the Play!Pokémon Terms of Use, which we have linked here. Additionally, you will need a Play!Pokémon player ID. This must be linked to your game by signing in with your Pokémon Trainer Club account.
You obtain this through the Pokémon Company’s site. There you will need to sign in with your Pokémon Trainer Club account. Once you are logged in, you can assign an ID through the Play!Pokémon settings and the sub-point Play!Pokémon account (via pokemon.com).
Qualification and Rewards
How can you qualify? Registered trainers have the opportunity to secure a ticket to the Pokémon World Championship in London through regional and international qualification events. When and where the respective tournaments will take place are also not yet known.
Are there rewards? In addition to the title of “Pokémon World Champion”, trainers participating in the Pokémon World Championship can also win a variety of prizes, according to the Pokémon Company (via pokemon.com). What these will be is yet to be announced.
