Defeating Heatran in a Duo – Here’s How
These are good counters: Heatran is a Steel and Fire type. It is vulnerable to Fighting, Water, and Ground types. Against the latter, it even has a double weakness.
Therefore, use mainly Ground Pokémon. They are significantly better than those of the other two types. You can find the best counters against Heatran here.
This is how the battle becomes easier: Always keep in mind that weather and friendship level can positively affect the battle. If you have weather bonuses and are battling with a best friend, you have the best conditions.

Defeating Heatran at Level 30 – Here’s How
Meet these requirements: At level 30, you and your partner should already be best friends. It is possible with lower levels, but it will be significantly harder. You have a total of 5 Pokémon to choose from here.
Use these Pokémon: The 5 Pokémon are also the best counters against Heatran. Pay attention to the right moves:
- Knakrack with Mud Shot and Earthquake
- Rihornior with Mud Slap and Earthquake
- Groudon with Mud Shot and Earthquake
- Stalobor with Mud Slap and Drill Run

Defeating Heatran at Level 35 – Here’s How
Meet these requirements: At level 35, the friendship level is not as crucial. If you use the top 5 counters, then the level does not matter. Better friendship gives you even more options with counters.
Use these Pokémon: 3 more Ground type Pokémon can be used to defeat Heatran in a duo. However, the best friendship level is important:
- Golgantes with Mud Slap and Earth Power
- Geowaz with Mud Slap and Earthquake
- Donphan with Mud Slap and Earthquake
Defeating Heatran at Level 40 – Here’s How
Meet these requirements: At this level, the friendship level is completely irrelevant, and you can easily defeat Heatran in a duo if you have the top counters. With the right friendship level, even more counters are possible.
Use these Pokémon: 2 additional counters come into play if you have the right moves and the correct friendship level:
- Sumpex with Mud Shot and Earthquake
- Libelldra with Mud Shot and Earth Power
How difficult will the battle be? If you use the top counters, then the duo will also be manageable at level 30. If you want to experiment with slightly weaker Pokémon, it might get a bit tighter.
This is interesting to see: Only Ground type Pokémon can manage to defeat Heatran in a duo. This is due to Heatran’s double weakness against Ground. So take full advantage of this weakness and only use Water or Fighting Pokémon when using three.
