In Pokémon GO, the max level could soon increase. The cap of level 40 might soon be a thing of the past, hint the developers.
What happened? On the evening of November 17, 2020, the Pokémon GO team published a mysterious tweet. They wrote “Level 40 Cap?” along with a questioning smiley.
The “Level 40 Cap” represents the maximum level of level 40 in Pokémon GO. This has been the highest level since the game’s release in 2016. Players have long been asking for an increase in this limit because some have reached it for years and want new goals.
With this tweet, Niantic is specifically addressing this desire.
Update from November 18 at 3:00 PM: It is now official. The new max level in Pokémon GO will be level 50. To reach the new levels, you will need to do more than just earn experience points.
And in the coming months, Niantic has a lot in store. They are improving the gaming experience, revamping PvP, and bringing the 6th generation in the largest update Pokémon GO has ever received.

What has happened so far: In recent years, level increase has been a recurring topic in the community. And Niantic has provided minimal information in a few places.
- In 2019, we asked Niantic about the status of level 50 in Pokémon GO – They told us that they are considering such an increase and exploring new ways to level up.
- A leak showed possible level-up rewards up to level 50 in April 2020.
- In June 2020, Niantic said that experience points will still be associated with level-ups in Pokémon GO – They remained quite vague about it.
- In July 2020, Niantic provided more details and explained that leveling after level 40 feels different than up to level 40 – This sounded like the first plans for how they want to change the experience.
So far, the information has been very limited. With the new tweet, discussions among players have been reignited.
This is now exciting: After the many leaks on the topic and Niantic’s smaller, vague statements, it seems that the subject is becoming more important to the developers. The fact that the team is reaching out to the community could mean that more information about the increase will come soon.
