In Pokémon Go there are new raid bosses! The new bosses in September 2019 are themed around the event “Johto Journey”. Here you will find a complete overview and the best counters.
These are the new bosses: In raids, you will encounter mainly Pokémon from this region – especially monsters from the second generation, appropriate to the event “Johto Journey” which started yesterday. The event runs until September 9 and primarily gives you the opportunity to get rare Icognito forms from eggs.
Raid bosses of the 2nd generation in September 2019
In the raids, you will encounter Johto Pokémon such as Wiesor, Sonnkern, Sniebel, or Donphan. In Tier 5, you will meet the legendary dog trio consisting of Raikou, Entei, and Suicune.
At the lower raid levels, you can also face some Alola forms. With many monsters, you also have the chance for Shinys – just like in the current field researches. We show you all bosses and how you can counter them best.

These bosses you can fight: Here you see all bosses at a glance. All bosses marked with an asterisk* can be encountered in their shiny form!

The current raid bosses at level 1 / Tier 1
You should be able to defeat the raid bosses at level 1 without major problems. Therefore, no counter recommendation is necessary here. At level 1, you can face Wiesor, Sonnkern, Kramurx, Snubbull, and Hunduster. You can encounter all these Pokémon in their shiny form.
The current raid bosses at level 2 / Tier 2
Even at level 2, you shouldn’t encounter too many problems. Here you will face Alola Kokowei, Tannza, Skorgla, Sniebel, and Flunkifer. You can also catch these Pokémon in their shiny form.
The current raid bosses at level 3 / Tier 3 – with counters
- Alola Raichu*: Alola Raichu is an Electric and Psychic type. With the following counters, you should be able to defeat it easily:
- Mewtwo with Psychoklinge and Spukball
- Despotar with Biss and Knirscher
- Gengar with Dunkelklaue and Spukball
- Pottrott*: Pottrott has the types Rock and Bug, so you can effectively attack it with Water, Rock, and Steel attacks:
- Metagross with Patronenhieb and Sternenhieb
- Rameidon with Katapult and Steinhagel
- Kyogre with Kaskade and Hydropumpe
- Panzaeron: The bird Pokémon Panzaeron is a Steel and Flying type, making it susceptible to Fire and Electric type attacks:
- Lavados with Feuerwirbel and Hitzekoller
- Elevoltek with Donnerschock and Stromstoß
- Raikou with Donnerschock and Stromstoß
- Donphan: Donphan is a classic Ground Pokémon and therefore has problems with Water and Ice attacks. You can also try it with Grass Pokémon:
- Kyogre with Kaskade and Hydropumpe
- Kingler with Blubber and Krabbhammer
- Mamutel with Pulverschnee and Lawine
- Keifel: Keifel is an Ice and Ground type monster. It has multiple weaknesses, but with these counters, you will do best:
- Metagross with Patronenhieb and Sternenhieb
- Kyogre with Kaskade and Hydropumpe
- Kingler with Blubber and Krabbhammer
The current raid bosses at level 4 / Tier 4 – with counters
- Absol*: Absol is a Dark type Pokémon, so you can hit it hard with Fighting-type attacks. It also reacts poorly to Bug and Fairy attacks:
- Machomei with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Kapilz with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Hariyama with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Alola Knogga*: Alola Knogga is a Fire and Ghost type and has issues against the following counters:
- Rameidon with Katapult and Steinhagel
- Kyogre with Kaskade and Hydropumpe
- Kingler with Blubber and Krabbhammer
- Despotar: Despotar is a popular attacker of the Rock and Dark type. Especially with Fighting attacks, you can easily take it down:
- Machomei with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Hariyama with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Kapilz with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Ursaring: As a Normal type Pokémon, Ursaring is primarily countered by Fighting attacks. Therefore, we recommend the following counters:
- Machomei with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Hariyama with Konter and Wuchtschlag
- Kapilz with Konter and Wuchtschlag
The current raid bosses at level 5 / Tier 5 – with counters
- Raikou*: Raikou is an extremely good Electric attacker but has issues with Ground Pokémon. So try the following counters:
- Groudon with Lehmschuss and Erdbeben
- Knakrack with Lehmschuss and Erdbeben
- Rihornior with Lehmschelle and Erdbeben
- Entei*: The legendary Pokémon is a Fire type – and thus not a fan of Water, Rock, and Ground attacks. Try the following counters:
- Rameidon with Katapult and Steinhagel
- Kyogre with Kaskade and Hydropumpe
- Despotar with Katapult and Steinkante
- You can even defeat Entei with two players!
- Suicune*: Suicune serves as the Water Pokémon counterpart to Entei and Raikou. It is particularly susceptible to Electric attacks. Attack it with the following counters:
- Raikou with Donnerschock and Stromstoß
- Elevoltek with Donnerschock and Stromstoß
- Magnezone with Funkensprung and Stromstoß

- Deoxys (Attack Form in EX-Raids): This extraterrestrial Pokémon is a Psychic type. Therefore, you can attack it effectively with Bug, Ghost, and Dark-type attacks. We recommend these counters:
- Gengar with Dunkelklaue and Spukball
- Giratina (Altered Form) with Dunkelklaue and Spukball
- Mewtwo with Psychoklinge and Spukball
