In Pokémon GO there is currently a Valentine’s Day event, during which you could earn a very special bonus. We at MeinMMO have looked into what this bonus is and why now is the right time to tidy up your Pokémon storage.
What is it about? Even before the start of this year’s Valentine’s Day event, Niantic had unlocked a global challenge for trainers in Pokémon GO. A total of 70,000,000 gifts needed to be sent worldwide to earn a special bonus.
For this reason, we recommended that you wait to send your Pokémon. The global challenge has now been completed, and you can finally sort out your excess monsters. We explain what advantages this brings you.
That’s why you should send Pokémon now
As Pokémon GO announced via its Twitter account on the night of February 11, 2022, the global challenge has been completed. Thus, you have earned a threefold candy bonus when sending your Pokémon. This means that for each monster you send to Professor Willow, you get 3 candies.
For this reason, you should take this opportunity NOW and sort your Pokémon. This is particularly useful when sending rare or legendary Pokémon, as you typically don’t receive candies for them often. This includes Pokémon like Registeel and Regirock.
But also monsters that have strong evolutions, such as Machamp, Swablu or Magikarp, can be useful for collecting some extra candies.
What the community says about the bonus
Many trainers in the reddit community are also pleased about this bonus. However, some would have liked an additional guaranteed XL candy when sending, so they prefer to hold back their monsters. Among the comments there are, for example, (via reddit.com):

- Odin043: “I have been hoarding Pokémon for this bonus. I’m sitting on thousands.”
- Tuelegend: “I’m glad I got rid of my Tanhel, Larvitar, Wurmple, and Dratini.”
- JosephBayot: “No guaranteed XL? Looks like I’ll be saving my legendary trash (and the already traded Swablu, Machop, etc.) for when this bonus comes back.”
Trainer Tuelegend also points out in a comment that now would be a good time to activate a Mystery Box with Meltan. With the candy bonus for catching, which is additionally available during the Valentine’s Day event, you can secure 15 candies per Meltan by using a Nanab Berry and then sending it.
If you are not happy with the current spawns, you can also take advantage of this opportunity.
You have until
After the goal was reached, a timer was activated in the game to show you the remaining time. However, there was a bug, which is why a different time is shown on the timer in the map view than in the ‘Today’ view. This has led to confusion among many trainers.
As Niantic has now announced, the candy bonus when sending will be available until February 15, 2022 at 12 PM PST (via twitter.com). This corresponds to 9:00 PM German time.
You still have some time to tidy up your Poké Bag. This is especially worthwhile in preparation for the Community Day on February 12, 2022.
