You caught a Pokémon in Pokémon GO: Is it worth keeping and leveling the Pokémon? Here you get tips on how to determine the strength of your Pokémon.
When you catch a Pokémon in Pokémon GO, you first see the obvious battle points (BP). These indicate how strong your Pokémon is and consist of health points (HP), attack, and defense. However, if you want to know exactly how strong your Pokémon really is, there is more to consider than just the BP.
There are also the so-called IV values, which can tell you in detail whether your Pokémon scores particularly high in defense, attack, or HP. This means you can see whether your Pokémon is particularly good at attacking or defending in a gym.
However, the IV values are hidden and you cannot see them easily.

What IV values does my Pokémon have?
Since the update 0.35, you can have your Pokémon evaluated by your team leaders in Pokémon GO. They evaluate the Pokémon with different phrases that let you know how well your Pokémon performs in the IV values of HP, attack, and defense. The statements of the team leaders differ for the respective teams.
The IV evaluation by the team leaders takes place in three steps:
- The overall impression – These are your IV values overall: HP, attack, and defense. The sum can be a minimum of 0 and a maximum of 45. Each of the three values can individually range from 0 to 15.
- The highest IV value – The team’s first statement determines this. If other IV values are equally high, these are mentioned in the second statement. The exact height of the highest IV value is described with the last statement.
- Weight of the Pokémon – The Pokémon’s weight is also estimated and plays a role.
This is what your team leaders say in detail. Here you will find a list of the team leaders’ phrases. Through these, you can better determine your IV values.
If you want to know exactly, you can also use a tool from the SilphRoad mathematicians to calculate your IV values. Just click on “IV Rater”.

Why are my Pokémon’s IV values important?
With that, we clarified that hidden IV values exist and how to find them for every Pokémon. Now we come to the question of why these values are even important. The IV values make your Pokémon special and unique.
They are responsible for why a friend’s Pikachu is better than yours, even though you have the same trainer level and your Pikachu is maxed out. Therefore, it is always worthwhile at least to check the phrases of the gym leaders if you want to level up a Pokémon or to use the IV calculator from SilphRoad.
What else should I consider before leveling or evolving a Pokémon?
- Level up your Pokémon only when you have reached trainer level 20. Only then will you find really strong Pokémon. Leveling or evolving Pokémon before that would be a waste of stardust and candy.
- If you evolve a Pokémon, its IV values do not change. Pokémon with weaker IV values are better traded for candy.
- You should evolve your Pokémon before leveling them with stardust! The move set of the Pokémon changes when evolving. There are stronger and weaker attacks. Pokémon GO: The best attacks
- The rarer Pokémon are usually not really suitable for battling or leveling. You find too few of them to get enough candy.
