In Pokémon GO the next Rocket takeover will start in a few days. During this event, you will encounter Crypto-Regirock, a new legendary Crypto Pokémon in Giovanni’s team. We will show you what kind of monster it is and whether it’s worth it.
What is the Rocket takeover? Just like in the anime, members of Team GO Rocket are causing trouble in Pokémon GO. At irregular intervals, the villains take over the game for days and can be found more frequently at PokéStops and in balloons.
But that’s not all, as the grunts and bosses will once again use new Crypto Pokémon in battle. This also applies to their leader Giovanni, who will bring Regirock as a new legendary Crypto Pokémon into his team starting from the new Rocket takeover. We have summarized how strong the monster is and whether it is worth using the Super Rocket Radar.
When does the Rocket takeover run? The Rocket takeover is a part of the event “Like Day and Night”. However, it will start with a delay on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 12:00 AM local time and will be active until June 25 at 11:59 PM local time.
What kind of Pokémon is Crypto-Regirock?
Regirock is a legendary Pokémon from the 3rd generation of games with the Rock type. It has no pre-evolutions or evolutions. However, it is part of the so-called legendary giants.
These also include Registeel and Regice, both of which have already been part of Giovanni’s team, as well as the last two top raid bosses Regieleki and Regidrago. According to legend, they were created by Regigigas, which is why he is the leader of the golems. Now you can catch the Rock Pokémon in its Crypto form.
What makes the Crypto form so special? Crypto Pokémon are monsters that have been influenced by Team GO Rocket. You can recognize them by the typical purple smoke. Compared to the normal form, the Crypto variants are slightly stronger. This is because their attack value is increased by 20%.
However, their defense decreases, making them easier to defeat. The main problem with Crypto Pokémon is their charged attack Frustration
. This is not particularly strong but cannot be easily changed either.
To switch them to a better attack, you need to make the monsters forget Frustration, which only works during certain events with the help of a charged TM. During the Rocket takeover, this will be possible again. So, if you catch a Crypto-Regirock during this time, it would be advisable to change the attack immediately.
What does Regirock look like? The legendary Pokémon can be recognized by its large build, which resembles a golem. It can move similarly to a human and has arms and legs. Its body consists of gray and brown rocks. Seven yellow dots form its face.
Is Crypto-Regirock worth it?
How strong is it: Regirock can primarily score points with its enormous defense value in its normal version. Its stamina and attack are solid. Thus, it ranks 6th in the PvPoke rankings in the Hyper League with a moveset of Target Shot, Stone Edge, and Focus Blast.
Its Crypto variant is slightly weaker here because it can take less damage in battle. Nevertheless, it secures the 12th place in the Hyper League. And even in the Master League, it offers a good alternative as a solid Rock attacker.
In raids, Regirock is less interesting. There are some Rock attackers, such as Rhyperior or Rampardos, which have significantly better attack values than the legendary monster (via gamepress.gg). Therefore, you should rather rely on the best attackers in Pokémon GO.
Is there a Shiny-Regirock? The shiny variant is already active in Pokémon GO. It has a brown body. However, in its Crypto form, Regirock cannot yet be caught as a Shiny.
Who is Regirock worth it for? The legendary Pokémon is especially interesting for trainers who are still looking for a strong Rock attacker for PvP battles. It is also worth catching for completing the PokéDex.
For use in raids, it is rather uninteresting, and shiny hunters will not find what they are looking for with Giovanni’s new Crypto. So think carefully about whether to use your precious Super Rocket Radar for this or save it for the next Crypto Pokémon in Giovanni’s team.
How to get Regirock?
Track down Giovanni: At the start of the Rocket takeover, you will gain access to a new special research called A Rocky Path
, which will revolve around Team GO Rocket. As usual, you will have to battle the grunts as well as bosses Sierra, Arlo, and Cliff to finally be rewarded with a special Super Rocket Radar.

How long do you have for this? The special research will be available in the game during the entire season “Hidden Gems”, until September 1 at 10:00 AM local time. To get the Super Rocket Radar, you need to complete the research within this time.
